Stunning Painting by Tiko Kerr!
Tiko Kerr

Tiko Kerr's paintings are a stunning testimonial to our city, our buildings, our landmarks, our landscape, our heritage and our people. His paintings evoke the rhythm and spirit of our neighbourhoods in brilliant, vibrant colour.

Tiko is also incredibly generous, compassionate, and devoted to the many causes he supports, including the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. Once again, he has donated the most stunning painting to CBC Food Bank Day!

Tiko's artist statement for the painting The House of Beauty (Maxine's) and why he chose this one to donate for the Food Bank:

The title describes my frustration being a long-time West End resident who is witnessing the disposable treatment of one of the last remaining poetic, historical buildings that speaks of our Spanish heritage.

Maxine's was dedicated to the notion of Beauty, and has lingered for over a century until sadly she finds herself a victim of spot-rezoning.

Maxine's legacy garners little respect in this graceless age. And it is Grace that allows us to come together as we are now, to tend the hungry in our neighbourhoods.

Vancouver's Food Bank and the image of Maxine's House of Beauty speaks of community and the many forms that nourishment takes.

The House of Beauty (Maxine's)
16 inches x 12 inches, acrylic on canvas

Tiko Kerry painting

Background on the painting The House of Beauty (Maxine's):

The painting depicts one of the last 'Hollywood Style' Mission Revival buildings in Vancouver, located at 1215 Bidwell Street. Built in 1906, it became a beauty school under Maxine McGillvary and later developed a colourful career as a series of nightclubs, speakeasies, bordellos and restaurants. There are tunnels running beneath Maxine's to what once was Simpson's Boathouse on English Bay and to the Roger's Mansion 'Gabriola', for the purpose of rum-running. There have been many testimonials of people witnessing ghosts. Actor Errol Flynn died in the arms of his underage paramour there in 1959.

This is part of a series of paintings I'm undertaking to describe West End sites, some 8 to 10 so far, that are being threatened for demolition or 'facadism' (whereby a developer is allowed to preserve only the facade of the building) in the city's quest to develop incongruous 20 to 30 storey condominium towers through spot-rezoning, throwing away all previous development plans and guidelines.

I've been a vocal opponent, with my neighbours, calling ourselves WestEndNeighbours.ca and most recently I've been appointed to sit on a committee of 12 residents to assist in developing a comprehensive community plan that acknowledges community priorities and the impact that potentially another 6,000 residents would have upon West End services, amenities and moreover to the quality of life. The committee is called the West End Mayor's Advisory Committee and shall be running for the next year or so.

Treat Yourself to a Season of Theatre in Victoria!
Theatre in Victoria

ONLY offered up during CBC Radio On The Island
(5:30 to 8:37 a.m., out of Victoria)

Not only will you receive two Blue Passes (Season Tickets) to Blue Bridge Repertory Theatre's exciting 2011 lineup, but you'll also be the lucky recipient of five pairs of single tickets to the December 2010 performance of the holiday classic, "It's a Wonderful Life".

For the second year in a row, a Blue Bridge show has been named the "theatre event of the season". Now entering it's third year of world-class productions, Blue Bridge presents the People's Choice Season - where all three productions (a comedy, a drama and a musical) have been chosen by the public. The Blue Pass offers you the best seat selection for all three shows and lets you select your desired seats and dates. The pass also offers ticket exchange privileges so you can see the same play another night when you can't attend your chosen performance. All shows are performed at the beautifully restored McPherson Playhouse, located a short distance from the bridge after which it's named. First opened in 1914 as the Pantages Theatre, the playhouse was re-named after Thomas Shanks McPherson bequeathed the theatre and funding for its reconstruction to the people of Victoria. Considered by audiences, critics, and theatre artists to be one of most beautiful and acoustically friendly theatres in Canada, the "Mac" offers audiences a level of intimacy enjoyed only in the best historic theatres in the West End of London and Broadway.

This fantastic prize includes:

  • Two Blue Passes for Blue Bridge Repertory Theatre's 2011 season
  • Five pairs of single tickets to the holiday classic, "It's A Wonderful Life", which runs from Dec. 15th to 19th, 2010

ONLY offered up during CBC Radio Daybreak North
(5:55 to 8:37 a.m., out of Prince George & Prince Rupert)

With this prize, you'll be the proud new owner of a large Hoselton Aluminum Sculpture, shaped like an eagle's head - courtesy of Rio Tinto Alcan. No two pieces are exactly alike, so you'll have a truly one-of-a-kind piece of art.

In addition, you'll also enjoy 24 exclusive rolls of heavy aluminum foil gift wrap, courtesy of Rio Tinto Alcan. CBC Radio One Food Bank Day: A Brief History

In December 1986 The Afternoon Show host Patrick Munro hosted the first CBC Radio Food Bank Day. Vancouver was basking in the afterglow of the highly successful Expo '86 yet the lineups at the newly established Vancouver food bank were growing.

Anne Penman was the producer of that program and has coordinated the annual event ever since. That first show was two hours long and raised about four hundred dollars as well as two or three boxes of canned goods.

In 1987 the morning show The Early Edition and B.C. Almanac joined in and did special food bank related programs all on the same day in early December.

In the early nineties all three shows moved to the Pacific Center Mall to broadcast Food Bank Day in front of a live audience. The CBC Radio bureaus in Victoria, Prince Rupert, Prince George and Kelowna also joined in with special editions of their morning shows on Food Bank day.

The addition of toll free pledge phones, all manned by CBC employees volunteering their time, caused the dollar amount of donations to climb remarkably.

In 2009 CBC listeners donated $569,557.00 to food banks throughout British Columbia.
