Tiko Kerr Painting "Dog Days"
Tiko Kerr

ONLY offered up during CBC Radio The Early Edition
(5:30 to 8:37 a.m.)

Once again, world renowned Vancouver artist Tiko Kerr has donated a stunning painting for the CBC Food Bank Day!

This beautiful, colourful painting, entitled "Dog Days", describes the thick of summer that doesn't seem to last for too long. It's the moment of meteorological bliss that immediately irradiates the seemingly pervasive grey. This painting is an attempt to rekindle the heat of those hours in the sun, particularly in the less than tropical winter we currently find ourselves in today.

It is acrylic on canvas, 16" X 12", framed, dated November 2011.

Tiko Kerr's paintings reflect his passion for life, for colour, for history, for nature, for people. His unique vision is distinctive and powerful. Doris Shadbolt states that Tiko's way of seeing things is "in the spirit of Van Gogh and Soutine", and that his images have a "striking spectral beauty, reminiscent of the German-Swiss artist Arnold Bocklin". Tiko himself says "There is much mystery and wonder in familiar things we may dismiss as ordinary. All things have spirit and rhythm". Tiko is also a fighter, not only for his own health, but for the welfare of others. He is extremely generous supporting many charitable organizations and community groups working to make the world a better place, as beautiful as his paintings.

A foodie's dream come true… world renowned three-star Michelin Chef Michel Roux from The Waterside Inn at Bray on the Thames in England, with Vancouver's own multi-award winning Chef Pino Posteraro, together! The desserts will be prepared by Chef Pino's amazing team and both chefs will enchant you and your guests with stories and anecdotes.

Chef Roux has held three Michelin stars for 25 years. He is the author of several best selling cookbooks including Pastry, Eggs and Sauces. Born in Charolles, Saône-et-Loire, he moved to Paris with his family after the war, where they set up a charcuterie. At the age of fourteen he became a patissier. When his older brother Albert moved to London, Michel followed him, and in 1967 they opened their first restaurant, Le Gavroche, which became the first restaurant in Britain to gain one, two and then three Michelin stars. In 1972 they opened the Waterside Inn. Michel was awarded the Meilleur Ouvrier de France for patisserie in 1976 and an honorary OBE alongside his brother in 2002 and is the recipient of The International Center in New York's Award of Excellence.

Chef Posteraro was born in Lago, Italy. At the age of twelve he came to Canada to visit his brother not realizing at the time that later in his life he would be making Canada his permanent home. After beginning training as a medical student, Pino changed track and decided to come to Canada to work for his brother in his restaurant. Pino later returned to Europe to study with Armando Zanetti, who became his mentor. Before returning to Canada he worked in several well known restaurants in Europe and Singapore. In 1999, Pino opened Cioppino's Mediterranean Grill, providing Vancouver with an outstanding Italian-Mediterranean restaurant which has gained many awards for its food and wine. CBC Radio One Food Bank Day: A Brief History

In December 1986 The Afternoon Show host Patrick Munro hosted the first CBC Radio Food Bank Day. Vancouver was basking in the afterglow of the highly successful Expo '86 yet the lineups at the newly established Vancouver food bank were growing.

That first show was two hours long and raised about four hundred dollars as well as two or three boxes of canned goods. Anne Penman was the producer of that program and has coordinated the annual event ever since.

In 1987 the morning show The Early Edition and B.C. Almanac joined in and did special food bank related programs all on the same day in early December.

In the early nineties all three shows moved to the Pacific Center Mall to broadcast Food Bank Day in front of a live audience. The CBC Radio bureaus in Victoria, Prince Rupert, Prince George and Kelowna also joined in with special editions of their morning shows on Food Bank day.

The addition of toll-free pledge phones, all manned by CBC employees volunteering their time, caused the dollar amount of donations to climb remarkably. Since 2009 the event has been combined with an Open House at the CBC building in downtown Vancouver. The public is invited to watch the food bank radio programs and tour the CBC integrated newsroom.

In 2010 CBC Food Bank Day raised $447,183.97 for food banks in British Columbia.

Friday December 2, 2011 is CBC Food Bank Day in British Columbia.
