Kathy Tomlinson goes public

My chance to tell the stories behind the stories - and see what you have to say back.
Welcome to our Go Public blog.
I'll post weekly - try to write colourful stuff - not go off on wild tangents - and - most of all - interact with you.
Every Go Public story we do has at least one back story - here's where I'll share them.
This week - I'm still scratching my head after meeting David Messina - the fake landlord who "rents" downtown condos - from unsuspecting owner/investors - who think he's the tenant - then "sublets" them for cash to foreign students. The catch is - he doesn't pay his rent and keeps subletting rooms even after being evicted.
What strikes me as odd - is how chatty Messina was - when I confronted him about his operation. He talked to me for 20 minutes on camera - then again when we came back a couple of days later. You've seen people run from TV cameras and tough questions - not him.
No apologies for what he does, either. He blamed the landlords - saying he doesn't pay rent only when landlords hassle him. He told me he's been "doing this" for years - even bragged the operation can make him 1.2 million a year.
Then he asked me not to report that.
He figured if he pulled down his baseball cap on camera no one would recognize him. He also informed me it would be "illegal" for me to use his name.
His only real worry - about me doing the story - he said - was that it would teach others how the "business" works - and he would get copycats cutting into the action!!
At least he was honest about that.

After the rent is paid for there may appr; 500 dollars left for food a bid of entertainment and then it is done nothing more left . Please do bring this to the attention of the viewers and to the proper authorities . Canada's CPP payment should be raised at least with 300 dollars a month for a single person and double this for a couple . this in order to raise the standard of living for all seniors . Thank for paying attention t this . John . Flipsen . Dcn .

Renter (Burnaby) wrote:Renting from Norm King -we have a similar experience of renting a high end apartment for 1 month and not having our $1,000.00 damage deposit returned. Nothing that he advertised on Craig's list was in place when we moved in. Some of it was fixed but 2 weeks into our stay an eviction notice was posted on the apartment door - Norm had said he was the owner and it turned out he was renting the apartment himself and now was being evicted.
He continues to advertise on Craig's list so there will unfortunately be more victims

bill dunford (vancouver) wrote:Referring to your story on employee stock options I have an example which in some ways is worse. I did some consulting work for a startup company and agreed to be paid in stock, which I was not allowed to trade for 3 months. If the stock price had risen I would have been liable for capital gains tax. Since it actually went down I am liable for tax on a value I could never have realized. On top of that I have already paid the GST on the original value.
By trying to help I have worked not just for free, but costing me tax (which is also of no benefit to the company).

They have sent me documents to fulfill that are duplicates of ones sent me 8 months ago and I have allready met the conditions of to the best of my ability. I am not a liar as they imply. I have a comment with regards to dual citizenship when I immigrated to Canada in 1964 I became a Canadian my mother, sister and brother still live in France however what upsets me is that when immigrants come to Canada they now can keep their citizenship from the country they emmigrated in other words they have a dual citizenhip and I feel that anyone with a dual citizenship should not be permitted to run for any seat in the government;if you recall when Mr.Dion was the leader for the liberals he was critized for having dual citizenship what about Mr.Ignatieff? he was born in Canada yet he was raised, educated and employed in the USA which means that he must have given up his Canadian citizenship in order to obtain an American citizenship and of course decades later when he returned to Canada he reinstated his Canadian citizenship ?I would like to know is he now a Canadian or did he keep his American citizenship which means he has dual citizenship and if that is the case he should not run for office or give up his American citizenship..............

Bruce Campbell (Coquitlam) wrote:I caught your feature on the people who are having difficulty with US Border Services. My own experience echoes those; stopped and searched, denied entry, fingerprinted and photographed, told I was "taking American jobs", and threatened with dire consequences if I "ever try that again".
I am a woodturning artist and have been teaching and demonstrating in the US since 2004 always entering the US honestly by quoting a reciprocal agreement under NAFTA that allows people who are considered “experts” work at “special events not to exceed three (3) days in length”. I use this agreement to invite artists to Canada and have never had one of them turned away. The same cannot be said going the other way.
I was refused in 2006 and I put it down to the officer just having a bad day. Since then I have entered honestly several times carrying a letter from the inviting club showing exactly what I was to be doing. This all came to an end on October 31, 2008 at the Aldergrove/Lynden crossing.
I presented my letter of invitation and was asked to pull over and go into the office. The vehicle was searched ad my ID taken. After about 30 minutes I asked if I was going to be allowed entry and the young fellow said, “No.” When I began to question why he asked if I wanted to speak to his supervisor who was not polite. I was not going to be allowed in. I was going down to take jobs from Americans. No amount of discussion made any impact. No quoting of NAFTA, no past events, just “NO”. I was finger printed, photographed and warned that I would not get off so easily next time. So I am now “tagged” and can expect heavy scrutiny in the future. They can seize my vehicle, fine me, and imprison me with virtual impunity. The process of appeal is long and expensive and heavily stacked in their favour.

Mr. Rothwell (Canada) wrote:More work needs to be done to expose the abuse of families by MCFD. They are destroying innocent families and sending children into the hell known as foster "care." Fighting for your children is extremely expensive and time consuming, especially when you are up against the vast power and virtually limitless resources of the state. The role that childrens' hospitals, and the "experts" that work there, also needs to be investigated, especially in light of what we know about their collaboration with child protection workers. There are too many Dr. Charles Smiths in Canada, and they are brutalizing families, destroying innocent children, sending them to an inimaginably horrific environment, where they will endure a lifetime of pain and suffering, and trauma from which they will never recover. The government is in the business of destroying lives, make no mistake about it. Thank you for reporting on this crucially important issue. Please do more investigating. Sooner or later, everyone is affected by so-called child protection. It's out of control, and has been for some time.

These scam artist will not be entitled to a lawyer, they can be involuntarily committed and institutionalized, just show police a copy of the BC Mental Health Act Section 28, the police do not even have to see the person doing anything, they can base their decisions on information received from others, and under the Privacy Laws these clowns won't be able to find out who called police.

Mavis Lowry (1367_Alberni_Street__The_Lions_West_Tower_Vancouver) wrote:I sit on the strata council of The Lions on Alberni Street. We had the misfortune to have David Messina as the so-called tenant of two suites in our building. I say "so-called because he didn't actually live here. He just came around to cause trouble.
We had to call police due to the way he harassed our concierge staff. He terrified residents here, even in the parking lot. He reportedly did unspeakable things to his unsuspecting ESL subletting tenants, by walking in on them in the night; but rather than call police or press charges after telling their stories to the concierge, these frightened kids who hardly knew the language, would move out, leaving Messina free to keep their money and then sublet to other young ESL students, the next victims. I can see why he claims to have made a million with his scam.
You have no idea of the problems he created for the landlord when she tried to evict him and the expense of the whole process as she went first to the Landlord Tenancy Branch and then to court and finally waited while his eviction time was extended by the courts. The Strata of The Lions had expenses due to this bad actor as well.
He knows the law because he has been through this before and he intimidates everyone in his path while the process runs it's painfully lengthy course.
He even threatened our property manager and his family who don't live in Vancouver. The police were of no use at all.
There should be some way to get the name David Messina known to owners of condos. Don't owners have a "Bad Tenant List" they could post on the internet?
Sincerely, Mavis Lowry

Vancouver will be one of the most incinerated cities in history. Do we even have the sense to put wires underground to prevent fires? Forget it. That would violate the Premier's rule of maximum incoherence.
No reporter effectively followed up on the melancholy Stats Can story on how university-educated immigrants fare in Vancouver. A few vague excuses from Metropolis, and back to business as usual. Plundering. Lying. Scamming.
