This colourful celebration will be animated by one of the most exciting new groups on the world music scene.

Juno-award winning musician and band leader Tom Landa (of Los Paperboys) is excited about his new band. "I definitely wanted to make a record to pay tribute to my Mexican roots, and with Locarno I'm able to do that with a group of amazing musicians. We blend Mexican and Cuban songs, funky Latin stuff, hip hop, and folk into a sound that is fresh sounding while still being faithful to those Mexican roots."

In a world teeming with music, Dan's new record matters - it stands out from the crowd.  The Vancouver musician has new songs to share which he says are deeper and darker than he's ever done before.  Just ten days before the album's release, Dan brought 11 musicians along with him to CBC Vancouver's Studio 40.  They recreated the album in its entirety, live in concert - track by track.  It was magic.

On Tuesday, March 15, join CBC Vancouver in celebrating Nowruz, the Persian New Year with Safa.

safa2resize.jpg
Safa (Farsi): inner purity, sincerity, sincere affection

Featuring: Amir Koushkani (persian tar and voice), François Houle (clarinets) and Sal Ferreras (percussion).

Three players brought together by good fortune and a deep love for music. Safa mixes traditional Persian themes with jazz improvisation in a combination that sounds like it should have been obvious all along.

Inspired by the profound passion of an ancient Persian repertoire, drawn into the realm of memory, evocation and delight, these three individuals bring to this project contemporary improvisations and neo-traditional settings that unfold in rhythmic play and timbral contrasts. Their work is at times playful, at times humorous, and at other times imbued with an intense rapture that delivers us into another world from which to view the beauty of our own gift of life.

We'll be announcing dates to watch specials in the coming months. In the meantime, enjoy some of the photos.

February 10

With 7 Canadian tours under their belt, Fish & Bird are well respected and are becoming well know in the Canadian music scene.  With the collaboration of Spirit of The West veteran leader John Mann, this will be a very special night.

Diverse musical influences collide in Fish & Bird's CD "Left Brain Blues". In just under an hour, Adam Iredale-Gray, Taylor Ashton along with their band take the folk genre for a ride through gardens of delights and some wicked, dark territory.

In addition to being the well known lead singer for Spirit of The West, John Mann is a songwriter, actor and entertainer in his own right.

A collaborative evening with Fish & Bird and "Mr. Mann" promises to be a great show; full of memorable and new roots musics. This show will be recorded live for CBC Radio's Canada Live and CBC's All Access television.
