CBC Radio One presents the 2012 Massey Lectures, "What Banged?"

CBC is proud to present the 2012 Massey Lectures, by the renowned physicist and cosmologist Neil Turok: The Universe Within: from Quantum to Cosmos.

Neil Turok is Director of the Canadian Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo Ontario; he was previously a professor of physics at Princeton and held a Chair of Mathematical Physics at Cambridge. In his book Endless Universe: Beyond the Big Bang -- Rewriting Cosmic History, written with Paul Steinhardt, he developed the theory of a cyclical universe. Neil Turok was awarded the James Clerk Maxwell medal of the UK Institute of Physics and, in 2008, a prestigious TED Prize.

Arts Umbrella celebrates the 30th anniversary of Splash

Arts Umbrella's signature fundraising event and charitable art auction Splash returns for its 30th year on Saturday, October 13. To mark this milestone, they're switching venues for the first time in three decades, leaving their traditional Granville Island venue and bringing their gallery and gala to CBC Vancouver at 700 Hamilton Street in Vancouver.

This year's theme "Defining Silence" is inspired by the glamour of the silent film era. Join CBC News Vancouver co-host Gloria Macarenko as she hosts an evening full of inspirational performances from Arts Umbrella students, live music, and culinary delights. Mingle with hundreds of Vancouver's business and community leaders, arts patrons, collectors and arts enthusiasts, bid on any of exceptional art pieces by leading local and international artists, and stay for dancing at the after-party.

UBC Dialogues presents Home Sweat Home: Can home ownership be achieved?

Join UBC Dialogues as they examine the affordability of the Lower Mainland's housing market in Home Sweat Home: Can home ownership be achieved?

Although the region's real estate market is cooling, the price of homes is still sky-high, mortgage rules are getting stricter, and there is a looming threat of a spike increasing interest rates.

With stagnating household incomes in the Lower Mainland and some of the highest living expenses in the country, even established professionals are finding themselves unable to break into the housing market - and those who do often struggle with the costs of maintaining their home and quality of life.

The evening's discussion will be moderated by CBC News National Reporter Chris Brown. The dialogue's panel will discuss how we can overcome the region's affordability issues, whether there are better ownership models available and more.

The Dragons' Den Social Summit is coming to Vancouver on September 28 as part of Vancouver's Social Media Week. Bruce Croxon and Jim Treliving of CBC's Dragons' Den will be among the panellists at the event.

Karin Larsen emcees "Dinner in the Park"

CBC Sports Reporter Karin Larsen will be emceeing this year's KidSport Vancouver fundraiser.

On Wednesday, September 12, join Karin as she hosts "Dinner in the Park" at Queen Elizabeth Park from 6pm until 9pm. Former CFL All-Star Davis Sanchez, Paralympic gold-medalist Michelle Stillwell, and Olympic medalists Ryan Cochrane and Carol Huynh, are just some of the Canadian athletes that will be joining Karin at the gala dinner and silent auction in support of KidSport Vancouver.

Proceeds from the event will help children in financial need to participate in sports by covering their registration fees and equipment costs. Last year KidSport Vancouver helped support 285 kids across B.C. and this year they're hoping to reach 500!
