January 2011 Archives

eva-benefit-concert-poster-final.jpgThe Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (Vancouver Chapter) and the Massey Theatre are hosting a benefit concert in honour and celebration of Eva Markvoort, a New Westminster woman who died on March 27, 2010 after a lifetime battle with cystic fibrosis.

Headlined by Dan Mangan, the 65_RedRoses concert will also feature the magnificent local 'indie' musical talents including The Zolas, Hannah Georgas, and David Vertesi. No fees are being paid to the artists. All proceeds from the event will go to the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in honour of Eva Markvoort.

Eva raised awareness for cystic fibrosis and organ donation through her popular blog 65_RedRoses and was the subject of an award winning documentary of the same name.  Tickets can be purchased from the Massey Theatre's box office.

January 6, 2011 - CBC News and CBC British Columbia announced today the expansion of CBC News Vancouver at Six on CHEK.

Beginning January 15, CBC News Vancouver will add new 30-minute weekend newscasts to the CHEK lineup, complementing the existing CBC News Vancouver at Six newscast seen during the week. These new broadcasts will make CBC News Vancouver at Six available 7 days a week on CHEK. The weekend team includes host Aarti Pole, sports with Karin Larsen and weather with Simone Grewal.

"Viewers on the Island have embraced the partnership CBC BC has developed with CHEK," says Johnny Michel, Managing Director, CBC British Columbia. "In addition to getting the best in news, sports and weather from the CBC News Vancouver team during the week, they will now have a great new weekend newscast hosted by Aarti Pole to get them ready for the week ahead."

CBC News Vancouver has been seen at 6 pm on CHEK since April 2010 when host Tony Parsons joined Gloria Macarenko, Shane Foxman and Claire Martin as part of the CBC News Vancouver team.

"CBC News Vancouver at Six has been a strong addition to our weekday news programming," says John Pollard, President CHEK Media Group. "Vancouver playwright Melissa James Gibson makes waves in NYC." - The Vancouver Sun

This.JPG
Starring Megan Follows as Jane

This is a crisp, smart urban comedy about modern relationships in crisis and Vancouver playwright Melissa James Gibson received critical acclaim for its recent off-Broadway production.

Jane is a promising poet without a muse and a single mother without lessons to pass along. Her dating life is a shambles and her helpful friends are only making things more complicated. This captures the uncertain steps of a circle of friends backing their way into middle age. For more information, visit The Vancouver Playhouse.

langlang.jpg
The VRS first presented Lang Lang when he was an unknown, fresh-faced 16 year-old. He made a big impression on the VRS' Artistic Director Leila Getz. Since then he has achieved superstar status and has been dubbed the "hottest artist on the classical music planet" by the New York Times. This upcoming concert will be his fifth with the VRS.

The 28 year-old pianist has built up a legion of loyal fans. He was featured in Time magazine's annual list of the 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2009. In 2008, over five billion people viewed Lang Lang's performance in Beijing's opening ceremony for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad.

ClaireLRN.JPGCBC News Vancouver's Claire Martin helped kick off Live Right Now yesterday at the Robert Lee YMCA. Patrons of the Y and CBC fans signed up for their accounts and got right into the action. Many started off their participation in this health movement by taking the Body Age Test. After seeing positive results, everyone pledged to continue being eating healthier and living a more active lifestyle.
