Interview: Alanna Gurr

alanna gurr sitting.jpg

When something bad happens -- maybe you stub your toe on the end of the bed ... Or maybe you get bumped on the escalator and now are wearing your cup of coffee... lot of expressions or words come to mind.

Many of them probably not radio friendly... and "Oh Horsefeathers" is probably not one of them.

But for singer-songwriter Alanna Gurr, that turn of phrase inspired her latest album.

Just in time for the new year...

jarvis church_16x9_620x350.jpg... we've got some great live music from Jarvis Church (left) live at the Jackson-Triggs Niagara Amphitheatre. What better way to prepare for the new year than with some great soul music? If you want to hear the whole concert for FREE on CBC Music, click here.

This week, Danny Michel takes on the 90-second egg -- find out his favourite mode of transportation (hint: it's not built for one!) and who he would invite to a dinner party...

You'll also meet Guelph singer-songwriter Alanna Gurr (right) and learn about the old-fashioned expression that inspired her latest album (it's a great one!)

UPCOMING SHOWS:

- Jarvis Church will be performing at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa on March 1st and 2nd. Details on his website.

And that's about it for this week -- and this year! Next week marks my last Bandwidth episode (I know, it's all over so soon!) so I hope you can tune in for my last show, where I follow up with bands we've met over the past year and share some of my favourite interview clips.

Have a fantastic New Year and see you next week in 2013!

Tape Culture in Ottawa

Boyhood.jpg

It's hard to believe they've made it this long... but the tape celebrated its 50th birthday this year -- at the same time Sony marked the occasion by killing their cassette player production this month.

But in some scenes, cassette culture is alive and well... and even seeing a resurgence.

Bandwidth intern Juanita Bawagan went to check out one of those scenes -- an album release party for an Ottawa record label that releases their music exclusively on tape. Click below to hear her mini-documentary, which aired on Bandwidth on Dec. 22nd.

Bands home for the holidays, cassette culture and lots of Christmas music!

claytones.jpg

(This week's blog courtesy of Juanita Bawagan, bandwidth intern extraordinaire)

This week, Bandwidth is guaranteed to get you in the holiday spirit!

You'll hear from bands that are coming home for the holidays after touring. The Claytones take you aboard the CP Holiday Train (left). They stopped in towns along the way to play benefit concerts for local food banks. The women of Trent Severn talk quintessential Canadian traditions and Diamond Rings shares the one thing he always does when he gets home.

Boyhood.jpg

Besides Christmas, you'll also get to celebrate the cassette's 50th anniversary with a look at underground tape culture. You'll be transported to an album release party for Belleville band Grime Kings and local artist Boyhood (right). You'll also meet the co-owners of Bruised Tongue records who release music exclusively on tape.

Of course, the show is packed with Christmas music -- but not the usual ones you may be hearing on repeat. Bandwidth has covers of the classics from Ontario musicians and some originals too -- including a set dedicated to a Charlie Brown Christmas!

UPCOMING SHOWS

- 8th Annual Young Rival Boxing Day Bash @ The Casbah (Hamilton) Dec. 26 8:00 p.m., $10. Here's the Facebook event.

And if you can't get enough Christmas music... be sure to tune in for A Holly Cole Christmas, featuring Holly live at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. The show's hosted by Meg and will air on Christmas Eve on CBC Radio 2 and on Christmas Day on CBC Radio One (both shows are at 6pm). And be sure to check out cbcmusic.ca/holidays for all of the great programming happening on CBC Radio on Dec. 24th and 25th!

Merry Christmas!

Interview: Matthew de Zoete

Thumbnail image for matthew de zoete studio EDIT.jpg

There's nothing quite like opening up a box of old family photos -- seeing your grandfather with a full head of hair or seeing a photo of your mom on the beach and realizing she was around the same age that you are now (terrifying!)

For Dundas singer-songwriter Matthew de Zoete, it was old Super 8 films of a family reunion that inspired his latest album, Colour Film.

Interview: Jonas Bonnetta

jonas bonetta studio.jpg

There are moments in life that shape you, that define you... Losing a close friend or family member is definitely one of those moments. For Jonas Bonnetta, who heads up the band Evening Hymns, it was the loss of his father that inspired the bands' new album, Spectral Dusk.

Spectral Dusk ebbs and flows through Jonas' grieving process -- his questions, his memories, hopes and fears -- treating them all with an almost surprising gentleness.

Interview: Anna Atkinson

A classically-trained singer-songwriter who works in the theatre with the Stratford Festival... You could say that Windsor's  Anna Atkinson wears a lot of creative hats.
And all of them have a chance to peek through in her debut album, Mooniture.

Their new album, Spectral Dusk, was written by Jonas after losing his father to a rare blood disease three years ago. The album is a beautiful tribute to Jonas' father and works its way through Jonas' grieving process. You'll hear part of the CD release concert at the Great Hall in Toronto.

Meg and Steven crop.jpgThis week, Steven Page (left, with Meg) takes on the 90 second egg... and you'll hear his cover of a classic Leonard Cohen song!
