Interview: Lynn Miles

What did Lynn Miles think of her 25th anniversary concert? What are her proudest accomplishments in her musical career? And -- most importantly -- which famous Canadian pop star did she almost get arrested with in Santa Monica?!

Celebrating 25 years of Lynn Miles

lynn cassette.jpgTwenty-five years ago, budding Ottawa singer-songwriter Lynn Miles recorded her first cassette in hopes of playing at some summer music festivals.

That tape led to a cross-Canada tour, and 10 studio releases later, Lynn is one of Ottawa's (and beyond!) best-loved singer-songwriters.

A6LLU6QCMAEDMt2.jpg large.jpgAnd what better way to celebrate her music career thus far than with a concert at the Knox Presbyterian Church (right) in her hometown? This week, you'll hear part of that anniversary concert, hosted by CBC Radio One host Alan Neal.

We're airing the Lynn Miles concert to celebrate Guitar Month, which is happening all November at CBC Music. Click here to check out all the fantastic guitar-related playlist, articles and interviews at CBC Music.

In other music news... congratulations to this year's winners at the Canadian Folk Music Awards! The celebrations were held last week in St. John, NB. Among the Ontario winners, Sarnia's veteran harmonica player Mike Stevens took home the first ever "Innovator of the Year" award for foundingthe ArtsCan Circle -- an organization that sends musicians and artists to work with young people in isolated First Nations communities. Click here for a list of the 2012 Canadian Folk Music Award winners.

Catch you back here next week for more Ontario music goodness!

Meg.

Interview: Jeff Rogers

jeff rogers studio sit.jpgYou might not think of Ottawa as a breeding ground for soul music, but one listen to singer Jeff Rogers and your mind will change.

Jeff has just released his sophomore album, called Let It Show. It includes some great collaborations with local bands like blues band Monkeyjunk and Jeff's 11-piece band The All-Day Daddies.

Jeff Rogers' soul and live mountain music from Serena Ryder

jeff rogers mic studio.jpg

Another week, another awesome lineup of Ontario musicians here at Bandwidth! First up, meet Ottawa's Jeff Rogers (left). If you're a fan of soul music, you're going to love his new album, Let It Show. We talk about the new album, what songs make him cry when he's performing onstage, and his two-to-eleven piece band (depending on the show!) the All Day Daddies.

Jeff's got two upcoming shows next weekend -- check "upcoming shows" below for the details!

Who doesn't love a great music video? The Elwins have delivered on the video for their latest single, "Forgetful Assistance"... the only way I can describe it is the lowest tech iPhone video you'll ever see. Check it out below:

And this week, Bandwidth takes you to the snowy peaks of Banff, Alberta, for a live show with Serena Ryder and the Beauties. Click here to hear the full concert recorded at the Banff Centre. If you can't get enough of Serena, her new album, Harmony, drops on November 27th.

- The Elwins play with Young Galaxy in Guelph at the E-Bar on Wednesday, Nov. 21st

Interview: Dave Norris

davenorris.jpg

"There's lonely, and there's lonelier..."
Ottawa rock band Dave Norris and Local Ivan talk a lot about being outsiders on their latest album.

It's called "They Let You Paint Your Darker Dreams"... and while it sounds like it would be all dark and angsty,
The record's a beautiful mix of richly layered folk-rock that WON'T turn you into a melancholy teen.

EXPAND YOUR BANDWIDTH -- the top 10 revealed!

meg and adam s in studio.jpgEighty entries and 44,000 votes later... it's time to share the top 10 in the Expand Your Bandwidth contest! Musician, DJ and CBC producer extraordinaire Adam Saikaley's in studio with me (left) as we reveal the acts still in the running for a live studio session right here on the show.

While the contest was mostly about the music, there were a few interesting twists -- one of them was watching bands as they brought out their own special incentives for voting for them. Most bands offered draws for free CDs or merch, but Ottawa all-girl pop band Scary Bear Soundtrack had a... different... idea:

... ouch. What some bands do for their art...

Here, in no particular order, are the top 10 finalists in the Expand Your Bandwidth contest, as determined by online votes:
