Papermaps grows up, and Arms of the Girl talks cover shows vs. original shows

Papermaps outside Zaphod's.jpg
What a week! Today, Bandwidth's got four brand spanking new releases for you -- from new Platinum Blonde (no, you didn't step in a time machine -- the Toronto dance-rockers are back with a new album 11 years after the band broke up!) to some gospel from up-and-comer Mati Haskell.

Indie rockers Papermaps (L to R: Bobby Lee, Dean Marino, Wendy Leung and Betty Dimo) had a gig last week in Ottawa, and we had a chance to talk about their new EP, Inferior Ghost, which drops on Tuesday. As the band's developed more of a history, they've grown into their own sound and are figuring out where they want to go. And if the sound of their first single, There Are Wolves, is any indication -- they're going places!

I've also got a chat with Ottawa rockers Arms of the Girl (R, David Cutler & Carolyn Cote). The band put out their third EP, Versions of Happiness, in the Spring, but they've got their fingers in many pies around the city -- in addition to their band shows, they also play cover gigs AND teach music lessons out in Nepean. How on Earth do they do it all?

You'll also meet Hamilton pop-punkers Thought Beneath Film -- their new EP, Detours, is a catchy mix of 60s pop, a bit of punk, and some sweet, sweet hooks.

UPCOMING SHOWS:

- Papermaps EP release party is August 28th at the Horseshow Tavern in Toronto

- The Strumbellas play Eaglewood Folk Festival in Pefferlaw, Ont. this weekend -- more show listings are on their CBC Music page

- Arms of the Girl plays a cover gig Sept. 14th at the James St. Pub -- more show listings are on their website

- Thought Beneath Film plays KOIFest in Kitchener

And that wraps things up for this week -- enjoy the rest of your weekend and I'll catch you here next Saturday!

Three Little Birds take their harmonies on tour, and Brian Dunn shares songs from the road

3 little birds standing.jpg

Another Saturday, another fresh Bandwidth episode for your ears! This week, you'll get to meet Three Little Birds (left), a trio of Ottawa ladies who mix politics with their folk music. They're hitting the road this week to tour across Ontario -- and hopefully to a venue near you! Find out their tour schedule here.

And while Three Little Birds takes to the road, Brian Dunn has just wrapped up a leg of a tour to promote his new album, TVs and Radios. Brian stops by to talk about his craziest touring story (it happened in Kenora, if you can believe it!) and why he loves writing about life on the road.

Lowell Sostomi of the Great Bloomers also stops by with a nutritious AND delicious 90-second egg... and the band's new single, I Wanna Die Young.

UPCOMING SHOW INFO

- the Musettes play TONIGHT (Sat the 18th) at the Lumiere Festival at Stanley Park in Ottawa. Show starts at 8pm. They're also playing the Avant Garde in Ottawa on Thursday, August 23rd. Check out their Facebook page for more info.

- Evenings Hymns releases their new album, Spectral Dusk, at the Raw Sugar Cafe this Sunday in Ottawa. Info here!

- Brian Dunn plays North Bay on Sept. 7th, with upcoming shows across Ontario in October -- check them out on his site.

And if you're looking for a great music festival to check out next weekend... have you considered Windsong? It's a great, small festival in Powassan, Ontario (not too far from North Bay!) You can check out the lineup here.

Have an awesome rest of your weekend and I'll catch you back here next Saturday!

The kids are alright! Chats with Little Stella, Liam Callan and Alyssa Reid

Little stella promo.jpgThis week on Bandwidth, we're spotlighting young'uns who are on the up-and-up in Ontario's music scene.

We dip into the Bandwidth vault for an interview with Manotick's Little Stella, who got together in high school and played hookie from university to work on their new album! It hasn't been released yet, but we preview of one of the songs that'll be on it.

Liam Callan studio.jpgWe've also got a conversation with 16-year-old Liam Callan, who's been living in different places around the world since he was born -- everywhere from Turkey to Hong Kong. His parents are originally from Burlington and Prince Edward County, though -- so it was here in Ontario that he recorded his new EP, called Start It Over Again. Liam explains what it was like to be taught music by a travelling Filipino minstrel!

And it's a triple-whammy this episode, because we've got a chat with Brampton teen sensation Alyssa Reid. We talk about how she got her start in the biz by covering another Ontario pop star on YouTube...Oh yes. we're talking about the Biebs.

That's on top of impressive rhymes by 15-year-old hip-hopper Akeil, and a new tune from a "folk-opera" album by 18-year-old Kemptville songwriter Christo Graham!

It's a Bandwidth long weekend dance party

Adaline2.JPGIt's the long weekend! As you enjoy that extra day of freedom, I'm bringing you some musicians that will definitely get you dancing.

First -- we're delving into the Bandwidth Vault top find an interview I did with electro-pop princess Adaline. You'll also hear a brand new remix of one of the songs off her album, Modern Romantics.

This week, you'll also meet Whitney Peterson. She's a singer-songwriter from Niagara-on-the-Lake... and when she recorded her debut album, she decided to think -- and get! -- outside the studio and let the outdoors sing back-up.

Slim Moore cover.jpg

I've also got some smooth LIVE jazz from Slim Moore and the Mar-Kays, out of Ottawa... if you can hear this and NOT dance, I'll think you're a robot.

Another great artist you'll hear this week is Isaac Rendell, aka Lyndon's Frozen Lake. He recorded his debut album, Be A Light, in the Manitowaning Anglican Church on Manitoulin Island... one of the oldest churches in Northern Ontario. Check out the video below to see the space:

And that's about it for this week -- have a fantastic long weekend!
