Bandwidth says: get outside!

Liam and Dan.jpg

For me, July means the start of summer music festival season -- and who doesn't love that? Hanging out on the grass, enjoying the sun, and the sound quality is so much better than my speakers at home.

So this week, Bandwidth is getting you in the festival spirit by playing tracks from different festivals happening next weekend all around Ontario (so you can still grab tickets if the urge for fest-ing strikes!)

I had a chat with singer-songwriter Liam Titcomb (right, with drummer Dan on the left) about what it was like to grow up on the festival circuit -- he spent his summers as a child on tour with his dad, folk-singer Brent Titcomb. We also talk about his new single, Love Don't Let Me Down -- which you may have heard a few weeks back on the show -- and his summer touring plans.

Meg and Steven crop.jpgSteven Page has played his fair share of festivals -- so I asked him for his best outdoor-stage stories (spoiler alert: one of them involves Metallica!).

If you're inspired by this week's show and want to catch some FREE live music in the Ottawa area, then come join me in Major's Hill Park at noon on Canada Day for the CBC's Canada Day Songwriter Circle. We've got a fantastic line-up of singer-songwriters from across the country -- David Vertesi from Hey Ocean!, Deon Blyan, Ash Koley, Beth Moore, Jeffrey Piton, and Bonnie Ste-Croix. Oh! And did I mention it's FREE?!

And if you can't make it to Ottawa, we'll be broadcasting the show LIVE on CBC Radio One, so be sure to tune in! (yeah, the broadcast is FREE too!)

Have an awesome Canada Day weekend and I hope to see you down at Major's Hill!

Meg.

Bandwidth celebrates National Aboriginal Day...

crystal for bandwith 1.JPG

...  how else? By featuring music from some of Ontario's most talented Aboriginal artists!

I had the chance to chat with country singer Crystal Shawanda (left)-- we talked about everything from her childhood on Manitloulin Island to sharing the stage with Loretta Lynn at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. Plus, we've got a track off her new album Just Like Me.

Singer-songwriter Nick Sherman also stopped by the studios -- his debut album, Drag Your Words Through, is one of my favourite finds this year. We talk a bit about his hometwon of Sioux Lookout, and his... broad definition of instruments while making the record (hint: campfire can be an instrument!)

Digging Roots

We've also got a chat with Digging Roots' guitarist Raven Kanatatka and live music from the band at the CBC Beat Tradition show, held at the National Arts Centre Fourth Stage in Ottawa in March (Raven's on the left, and singer Shoshona Kish is on the right). Want to feel like you were there? Then stream the whole concert here on CBC Music (it starts with Rise Ashen and Flying Down Thunder -- then follow the related links for the other performers).

UPCOMING SHOW INFO:

- catch all of Crystal's show dates on her website

- Nick's Ontario tour and summer shows are on his website

- A Tribe Called Red's blog is where you can find their upcoming shows

Remixes, Polaris long list and Kelly Sloan live in studio

Andrew Eccodek photo.JPG

It's a packed hour this week on Bandwidth! First, we chat with Andrew MacPherson, the brains behind Guelph-based world fusion band Eccodek. Andrew (left) explains how he fuses different sounds together (and makes it sound great!) and what it was like to hand his tracks over to other producers to be remixed for Eccodek's latest album, Remixtasy.

You can catch Eccodek live on June 22nd at the Summer City Street Party at Guelph Market Square -- they're also opening the Peak to Shore Festival in Blue Mountain Village on July 13th.

craig and rowan.JPGWe've also got a special Fathers' Day 90-second egg this week, courtesy of singer-songwriter Craig Cardiff and his daughter, Rowan (R to L). Find out who Rowan thinks should play her dad in the movie of his life (hint: he's green). Check out Craig's Facebook page for his upcoming shows.

The Polaris Prize long list came out this week -- the top 40 albums of the year (determined by a jury) are competing for the title of Canadian album of the year. The winner(s) win a cool $30 000 -- and, of course, loads of street cred. Ontario artists who were nominated include Bahamas, Feist, Kathleen Edwards, A Tribe Called Red, the Great lake Swimmers, and Cold Specks... click here for the full list.

kelly sloan.jpg

And we've got some great live music for you from Ottawa's Kelly Sloan. Kelly Sloan has just been named the 2102 Ottawa Folk Fest Galaxie Rising Star award recipient -- which means she'll be the first act on at the Folk Fest, warming up the stage for great acts like Matt Mays.

Kelly's right now on tour around Ontario -- find the full listing on her website.

A big congratulations to Trish Clarkson from Peterborough and Bridget Roussy from Ottawa -- they're heading to Jazzfest FREE, courtesy of Bandwidth! Their names were drawn in last week's contest.

And that wraps things up this week -- be sure to tune in next week to hear our special Aboriginal Day episode!

North Bay 60s throwback!

pic far neighbours.jpeg

... ok, maybe not quite. But this week we have an interview with North Bay alt-folk band Faraway Neighbours AND we have a chat with jazz chanteuse Emilie-Claire Barlow about her album The Beat Goes On, which is all 60s pop song remakes. So I'm gonna stick with that title.

Vince Aquilina, Chris Cucullo and Andrew Sowka (L to R) from Faraway Neighbours have had a pretty big year. They released their first album, Carry On, Man, mostly as a scrapbook of the band's music so far -- but then the great reviews came in. And they won a Northern Ontario Music and Film Award (NOMFA) earlier this spring. And now they've got some great gigs to look forward to this summer. But still, these North Bay-ers say they feel like country mice when they're in the big city (except for Andrew -- note his dapper vest in the picture).

Are the songs of the 60s the new American songbook? Emilie-Claire Barlow thinks they could be. Her latest album reworks classic 60s pop classics like The Beat Goes On and These Boots Were Made for Walking. She also spills some of the inside jokes that happen onstage... that you might not pick up on when you're in the audience.

!!!FREE STUFF ALERT!!!

Want to go to Ottawa Jazzfest -- for FREE? I've got two pairs of tickets to give away for one night of Jazzfesting of your choice. Just email Bandwidth (bandwidth@cbc.ca) telling us what performer at Ottawa Jazzfest you're most looking forward to seeing. You can also tweet or Facebook in your answer... but be sure to do it before midnight on Wednesday (June 13th) to be entered into the draw for the free jazz goodness.

And that's about it for this week! I'm working on a bit of a Fathers' Day surprise for next week... you'll find out next Saturday, so be sure to tune in!

It's time for a good ole fashioned road trip...

This week, singer-songwriters Nancy DutraWillow Rutherford and Allison Brown (L to R) share their stories from the road on their "Songs and Stories" tour along the 401 highway. We've also got some great, road-trip worthy tunes from Liam Titcomb, Right by Midnight and This Harbour. And we start a sneak peek at musicians performing at North by North East with a 90-second egg from Rick Ballard of the Gentlemen Husbands.
