Crew

Rachel Cave, Host

"We thought about calling the series Splitsville. You know, to lighten things up a bit. We also considered Ex-files and Ex-factor. At one point, Associate Producer Connell Smith suggested Curtains, which still makes me snicker. But we stuck with Asunder for reasons which become more apparent with every story you hear."

In the summer of 2008, Rachel produced the CBC Radio summer series on adolescence called Alien Nation, hosted by Judith Mackin. One of the producers on that series was Mark Tunney and you will hear his signature mixing skills in Asunder. Connell played a huge role in finding people who could tell their stories in courageous and interesting ways.

Rachel and I have been friends since we first worked together in the late '90s. We're not soul mates; we don't complete each other, but we agree on what makes good radio: raw storytelling from regular people, imaginative production; journalism that isn't afraid of being dramatic or creating a meditative space; a listening experience that's never predictable and makes listeners reflect on their own experiences.

I like the chase as much as any reporter, but I love the dance - figuring out how we're going to tell the collective narrative, how we're going to navigate all the notes. When I put on the headphones, I really get into my zone. Like no other medium, radio has the power to create journalistic symphonies.
