While snorkling last Sunday near Catalina Island, off the coast of Southern California, Jasmine Santana suddenly found herself face-to-face with a giant oarfish, a mysterious -- and rather ugly -- creature of the deep.

Once she realized it was dead, she did what anyone would do: she swam the five metres' distance to the other end of its body, and dragged it to shore.

Listen to Ms. Santana, a marine science instructor, tell her story to Carol here.
