Pat Sutherland is opening up a whole new chapter in Canadian history. The Memorial University archaeologist and longtime curator at the Museum of Civilisation has unearthed evidence of a Viking outpost on Baffin Island. That would mean that the Vikings took their longship far beyond the northern tip of Newfoundland. It would also mean that Europeans were living amonst the Inuit in what is now the Canadian north long before Cabot, Frobisher or poor Mr Franklin started poking around for the Northwest Passage.
Pat Sutherland presented her findings earlier this month at the annual meeting fo the Council for Northeast Historical Archaeology. We reached her in Ottawa. (CP Photo: Don Francis)
