Guor Marial to Run Under Olympic Flag
Tuesday, July 24, 2012 |
Guor Marial is a runner without a country. But now, the International Olympic Committee has announced that the 28-year-old stateless marathoner can compete as an independent, beneath the Olympic flag.
Last year, in his first attempt at the marathon, the middle distancer stomped his way to an Olympic 'A' standard time, qualifying for the London Games.
However, Mr. Marial is a Sudanese refugee who comes from the region that became South Sudan last year. South Sudan has no national Olympic Commitee, and since Mr. Marial, who has lived in the U.S. since 2001, is not an American citizen he found himself without a flag to run under.
We reached Guor Marial at his home in Flagstaff, Arizona.
