The captain going down with the ship has become a metaphor for honour, integrity and responsibility.
Francesco Schettino is the captain of the Costa Concordia, which ran aground off the west coast of Italy on Friday. He did not go down with his ship. He was safely aboard a lifeboat while hundreds of his passengers and teams of rescue workers remained on the dangerously listing vessel.
