We scoured the globe. We even put a request out to her on our show. And finally
we're happy to report that we've tracked down "Supergranny".
"Supergranny", of course, is the Google-Earth
explorer who discovered a giant rock head in southern
Alberta. And of all the places she could have possibly
been, we reached "Supergranny" right here
in Canada, one province over from her discovery -- in
Saskatchewan.
Listen
to Carol Off's interview with "Supergranny"
a.k.a. Lynn Hickox (Interview originally aired
on October 30, 2006).
Well, after feedback from you, and discussion in these
parts, we've chosen a shortlist of possible names --
a list that we're going to pass onto the council at
Cypress County, where the head is located. The council
will then choose a single name that the Alberta government
will research, and ultimately decide on.
"Cliff"
From R.G. Woodside in Nova Scotia
"Guardian of the Badlands"
From Travis Pond in Fredericton, New Brunswick
"Hickox's Head"
From Lynn Hickox (Supergranny) in Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan.
"In Plains View"
From Gregg Little in Alberta
"The Listening Rock"
From Tom McFarlane in Edmonton, Alberta
"Napi"
From Robin Peck in Fredericton, New Brunswick
"Space Face"
From Paul Lemelin in Ottawa, Ontario.
Cypress County Council has finally chosen one
of your names. It is "Badlands Guardian" from
Travis Pond in Fredericton, New Brunswick. But it isn't
official yet. We still have to give this name to the
Alberta Geological Names program. If we're successful
they will register it on all future topographical maps
for this region. So, stay tuned!
Here are some name suggestions we've received through
e-mail:
