PART ONE

ICE STORM BABY Duration: 00:06:26

Over the weekend, a massive ice storm turned roads to skating rinks, trees to glistening crystal -- and cut power for hundreds of thousands across Ontario.

And for most, it was an excuse for people to put off their pre-holiday plans and stay home -- or, in the case of those without power, to seek warmth in the homes of friends or family.

But there are certain things that simply can't wait. Early Sunday morning -- Paula Mbonda went into labour. And what followed was quite the odyssey.

We reached Ms. Mbonda at home in Pickering.

FROM OUR ARCHIVES: OBIT EDGAR BRONFMAN SR Duration: 00:03:02

Edgar Bronfman Senior rose to prominence as the Montreal-born C-E-O of the Seagram's liquor empire. But his greater legacy may be his work as a philanthropist and defender of Jewish rights.

The billionaire and former head of the World Jewish Congress died at his home in New York on Saturday. He was 84.

In the 1990s, Mr. Bronfman lead the international campaign for restitution from Switzerland for Holocaust survivors. He accused the Swiss of profiting from Nazi gold that was stolen from Jewish victims. He spoke about that campaign with former As it Happens host Michael Enright. OBIT: VITO RIZZUTO Duration: 00:07:19

No one expected him to die - at least not now, and not in this way.

Early this morning, mafioso Vito Rizzutto, known as the Teflon Don, died in a Montreal hospital reportedly of natural causes. He was sixty-seven.

Mr. Rizzutto was Canada's most powerful mafia boss, and last year he returned to Montreal after spending nearly six years in a U.S. prison for his role in a triple murder. While he was serving time, both his father and his son were gunned down in separate incidents. And since his return to Canada, there had been a rise in mob-related murders in Montreal.

Adrian Humphreys is an organized crime reporter for The National Post and he's the author of The Sixth Family: The Collapse of the New York Mafia and the Rise of Vito Rizzuto. We reached Adrian Humphreys in Toronto.

ENCORE PRESENTATION: UNCLAIMED Duration: 00:14:29

It was one of the most controversial documentaries of the year.

Back in May, Toronto's international documentary film festival "Hot Docs" screened the film "Unclaimed." It was about a man in Vietnam claiming to be an American missing-in-action soldier, Sergeant John Hartley Robertson. And the efforts of one Vietnam war veteran, Tom Faunce, to clarify the story.

Here is a clip of Mr. Faunce speaking in "Unclaimed," about his first meeting with the man who says he is John Hartley Robertson. The question raised in the documentary is whether this man is telling the truth - or is simply a fraud. And it was a question that ended up being debated around the world - particularly after the U.S. Department of Defense released documents questioning the film's conclusions.

During the Hot Docs release, the film's Canadian director Michael Jorgenson spoke to Carol in the As It Happens studio. He was joined by Gail Metcalf, the niece of missing American soldier, John Hartley Robertson. Here is an abridged version of the interview we ran last May.

XMAS REPEAT: "AS IT HAPPENED" ARCHIVE EDITION - UNEXPECTED Duration: 00:30:00

Maybe you're hoping for a certain something under the tree. You're probably anticipating eating way too much food. And perhaps you're even planning to chew on your own tongue to prevent yourself from telling certain relatives what you really think.

But things don't always turn out how you think they will.

This next half hour is all about the unexpected. This summer we brought you a show called As It Happened: The Archive Edition. It featured some of the best interviews from our forty-five years on the air. And tonight we bring you a replay of the episode featuring stories with a surprise twist.
