More cracks in his story. New surveillance documents are released in the case of Toronto Mayor Rob Ford -- and they suggest, among many other things, that he offered to buy the infamous crack video.
The fog after war. A fourth Canadian veteran of the war in Afghanistan in just over a week may have taken his own life -- and Canada's military ombudsman says it's time to face the fact that we're not providing soldiers with the support they've been promised.
Hiding Deloitte under a bushel. The Senate votes whether to haul a Conservative senator and his auditor friend before an investigating committee, amid ongoing grumbling about a cover-up.
First they taketh then they giveth away. Last year, an Italian woman was given a forced caesarean section -- and now the child is being put up for adoption, over her strenuous objections.
When a fictional character and another fictional character love each other very much... We'll share the winner of this year's bad sex writing award in literature -- but it's safe for the kids, in the sense that it's incomprehensible.
And...sharing their two scents.
New science shows that adult mice may pass along the fear of certain smells to their children and grandchildren.
It turns out that Toronto Mayor Rob Ford may have tried to buy the crack video he insisted didn't exist.
The allegations appear in dozens of new police surveillance documents released by the court late today.
Peter Jacobson argued for the documents to be released. He's a lawyer representing a number of media organizations. We reached him in Toronto, earlier today.

There are now four.
Canadian Forces officials have confirmed the death of Master Corporal Sylvain Lelievre at CFB Valcartier on Monday. He is the fourth Canadian soldier to die in just over a week. All four were veterans of Canada's war in Afghanistan. All four are believed to have taken their own lives.
The military is still investigating, but already other veterans are warning that a long-expected wave of Afghanistan-related PTSD may have finally arrived.
Pierre Daigle is Canada's military ombudsman. We reached him on Ottawa.

Hassan Lakkis was buried today amid rain, uncertainty and fear.
The senior Hezbollah commander was shot outside his home, near Beirut, this morning. His assassination comes a day after Hezbollah's leader -- Hassan Nasrallah -- accused Saudi Arabia of carrying out a bomb attack last month at the Iranian embassy in Beirut. To many, it is yet another ominous sign of growing sectarian tensions in Lebanon.
Hassan Lakkis's role in Hezbollah is shrouded in secrecy, but he once operated a procurement ring for the organization out of Canada.
Matthew Levitt has followed Hassan Lakkis' activity in Hezbollah. He is a senior fellow at the Washington Institute and the author of Hezbollah: The Global Footprint of Lebanon's Party of God. We reached him today in Sydney, Australia.

Henry David Thoreau had an utter disdain for lists. According to him, quote, "a man's interest in a single bluebird is worth more than a complete but dry list of the fauna and flora of a town." Unquote.
That may be so. But friends, Canadians, countrymen and women, boys and girls, and any dogs listening past our opening theme, I'm here neither to praise or bury the list. I merely wish to point out that we have always -- and now perhaps more than ever -- been defined by them. Need I remind you, dear listeners, that without a list, you would all just be dear "eners".
To-do lists. Mailing lists. Guest lists. Wish lists. Bucket lists. Top ten lists. Craigslist. It goes on and on.
Nevertheless, that interminable list of lists is now less one -- thanks to the folks at NPR Books. For the first time in many years, they have decided not to release their annual list of best books.
In an article titled "The Top 5 Reasons We're Taking A Break From Lists", they explained their decision. Quote:
"...as the holidays loomed this year, we were all suffering from a little list fatigue, and we started imagining new ways to approach our year-end best books coverage. And though the Internet may be determined to prove otherwise, we wholeheartedly believe that human beings are capable of absorbing new information in formats that are 1) not sequentially ordered and 2) wait ... dammit! and 3) never mind."
The team describes this year's review of books as more "Venn diagram-y than listy-y" -- and hence more fun and user-friendly. You can check it out for yourself by heading over to npr.org/books. You can even check it twice if you wish, list or not.

The Senate investigation into the Duffy-Wright deal will not be hearing from one of the allegedly key players.
Earlier this evening, Conservative senators voted down a Liberal motion that would have compelled testimony from Michael Runia. Mr. Runia is the Deloitte executive contacted by the Prime Minister's self-described Senate bagman, Irving Gerstein. After that call, Mr. Runia then contacted the auditors responsible for reviewing Mike Duffy's expense claims.
The Liberal Leader in the Senate calls that a cop out. We reached James Cowan in Ottawa.

An Italian woman wants her baby back from British social services.
The pregnant woman was institutionalized while visiting the U.K. last year. She suffered from a bi-polar condition. And during that time social workers in Essex, England had her baby removed by caesarean section.
The child has been kept in British care for over a year, but the mother -- who isn't being named -- says she is better. And she wants her baby returned. But the British courts have refused that request. And the child is being put up for adoption in the U.K.
Lucy Scott-Montcrieff is a mental health and human rights lawyer in Britain. We reached her in London, England.
British MP John Hemming is not happy about this situation. And he plans to raise the woman's case in the British Parliament. We reached Mr. Hemming in London.

In a standard university student's apartment, people wear a lot of patchouli, and trap a lot of mice. And now, science is suggesting that the mice babies born in an apartment like that could emerge from the womb terrified of patchouli.
A new study, published this week in Nature Neuroscience, suggests that the fear of a smell in a mouse father can be passed on to the mouse's offspring...and its offspring's offspring. These findings are being hailed for providing evidence of what's called "transgenerational epigenetic inheritance". Or, to use more words and fewer syllables, evidence that trauma can affect the DNA in sperm, and be passed on to progeny.
Brian Dias, a postdoctoral fellow at Emory University, is the lead author of "Parental olfactory experience influences behavior and neural structure in subsequent generations." We reached him in Atlanta, Georgia.

My voice streaks toward you like a meteor, gathering cosmic dust, its layers ionizing, shimmering as it approaches the event horizon of your ear holes.
Did that turn you on? Me neither. Not much, anyway. I guess vague science references and sensuality don't mix.
That's certainly the opinion of the judges of this year's Literary Review "bad sex prize". It's awarded annually to the writer who captures the most intimate of acts in the most inept of word ways. And the 2013 winner is Manil Suri, for a scene in his novel, "The City of Devi".
Mr. Suri has been longlisted for a Man Booker Prize, so he's not just some incompetent sleaze-meister.
If anything, he's too tasteful. Either that or he's describing a ménage-à-trois with so much ironic distance you'd need the Hubble Telescope to see what's really going on.
Here, now, is the award-winning passage. And don't worry about sending the kids out of the room -- the adults won't understand what's going on here either. Quote:
"Surely supernovas explode that instant, somewhere, in some galaxy. The hut vanishes, and with it the sea and the sands -- only Karun's body, locked with mine, remains. We streak like superheroes past suns and solar systems, we dive through shoals of quarks and atomic nuclei. In celebration of our breakthrough fourth star, statisticians the world over rejoice."
Congratulations and/or condolences to Mr. Suri. He has shown that writing about sex isn't -- and really shouldn't be -- rocket science.

Every year, the watchdog group Reporters Without Borders compiles a Press Freedom Index. And for six years in a row, the same country has occupied the bottom spot on that list -- below even North Korea. That country is Eritrea, in eastern Africa.
Once home to a thriving independent media, Eritrea now has none. The country's leading journalists were rounded up by the authorities over a decade ago, and have not been seen since. Most others were driven into exile.
Mebrahtu Teclesion Berhe is one of the few journalists who stayed, and dared to speak out in the face of repression. Today, he lives in exile in Uganda, where he continues to fight for free expression at home.
Mr. Berhe is one of three Eritrean journalists who are being honoured tonight in Toronto by the Canadian Journalists for Free Expression -- an NGO which works to preserve free expression around the world. Together, they are the joint recipients of this year's International Press Freedom Award.
Mebrahtu Teclesion joined Carol earlier in the "As it Happens" studio.

The tastiest one I've seen was made out of cupcakes. A slightly more disappointing version was made from "Hello Kitty" kitties.
I'm talking about menorahs. They come in all shapes and sizes. Some traditional. Some completely nerdy, made out of Star Wars Lego, or Pez dispensers, or the plastic heads of The Lord of the Rings figurines. I've even seen a menorah knit out of wool, which I'm pretty sure was ornamental and wasn't meant to be lit on fire. Lesson learned.
But the coolest menorah I've seen this year was made out of old radio tubes. I admit, I'm a little biased, but that is a menorah built with a latke imagination.
Tonight, the eighth and final candle on the menorah will be lit. And as Hanukkah comes to an end, we thought we'd share this story from the As it Happens archives. Here is Fireside Al reading Isaac Bashevis Singer's folktale, "Zlateh the Goat."
