Mulling a Mulligan. I'll speak to Senator David Tkachuk about accusations that he whitewashed the original report on his colleague Mike Duffy's expenses -- and what he'll do differently this time.
Going back would be a miscalculation. In April, prominent Russian economist Sergei Guriev left Russia, fearing imprisonment -- and tonight, he'll tell us why even an invitation from Vladimir Putin won't change his mind.
In cold blood. An American soldier pleads guilty to the massacre of sixteen Afghan civilians in two villages -- and a journalist who's spent time with the survivors tells us what she's learned.
I think, therefore I animate. Researchers with the University of Minnesota manage to maneuver a remote-controlled helicopter using only their minds.
No one said it would be "Ici". That is, until today -- when the CBC's French-language service, Radio-Canada, announced that its new name was finally "here". Literally, it's "Ici". Which means "here".
And...it turned joysticks into despairsticks. Legend has it that thirty years ago, Atari's "E.T." game was so badly received that the company buried millions of copies in a New Mexico landfill -- and now a Canadian company is digging them up.
As It Happens, the Wednesday edition. Radio that rarely gets the dirt off a story.
David Tkatchuk thought his work was complete.
Barely a month ago, the Conservative Chair of the Senate's Internal Economy Committee tabled a report on Mike Duffy's expenses. His boss, the government's leader in the Senate, congratulated Senator Tkachuk and said it was case closed.
The case is back open now. Turns out Senator Duffy's bogus expenses had been paid off by none other than the Prime Minister's Chief of Staff. Senator Tkatchuk and his committee have been asked to take a second look. And that earlier report has made Senator Tkachuk himself the target of accusations.
We reached the Senator in Ottawa.

That's a 1974 station I.D. for CBC's French service, Radio-Canada. The slogan, as you heard, was "Ici Radio-Canada" -- meaning "This is Radio-Canada" -- or, literally, "Here, Radio-Canada".
But here's the problem. Or rather, "here" is not the problem. The other words are.
You're confused. Frankly, so am I. But today, Radio-Canada -- which has been called Radio-Canada since its inception in 1936 -- announced a name change. Let's see if you can guess its new name from this excerpt from a promotional video.

Today he pleaded guilty to a brutal massacre.
U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Robert Bales is charged with the premeditated murder of sixteen Afghan civilians, most of them women and children. With today's plea, Staff Sergeant Bales is hoping to avoid the death penalty.
The night-time killings took place on March eleventh of last year in two small villages located near a remote military camp in Kandahar.
Since the massacre, journalist Kathy Gannon has spent a lot of time with the survivors and the families of the victims in Afghanistan. She is a correspondent for the Associated Press, based in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Today we reached Ms. Gannon in Guelph, Ontario.

Legend has it that they're buried in the desert of New Mexico. Millions of them, lurking beneath the sand. And that even after decades, they stink.
The legend -- passed on from video-game enthusiast to video-game enthusiast -- tells that, back in 1983, the Atari game "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial" was such a monumental flop that the company tried to banish it from the face of the earth. And that Atari did so by putting it under the face of the earth.
Well, now a Canadian marketing firm has plans to unearth Atari's painful episode. As part of a future documentary film, Fuel Industries of Ottawa has been granted the right to excavate the landfill, and unearth these unholy games once again.
To help us understand this strange story and its implications, we're turning to Randy Yasenchak. Mr. Yasenchak runs Elder-Geek.com...a news website for geeks. We reached him at home in Atlantic City.
A few weeks ago, economist Sergei Guriev was one of the most prominent and powerful liberal intellectuals in Russia. Today, he lives in exile in Paris.
And despite an invitation yesterday from President Vladimir Putin himself, Mr. Guriev says he will not return to Russia.
We reached Sergei Guriev tonight in London, England.

During Liberia's civil war, the slaughter of innocent people was common. But even so, one evening of violence in particular stands out: the Carter Camp Massacre.
On the night of June 5th, 1993 and into the next morning, in just a few hours, militia fighters killed hundreds of people -- including many children.
Today, twenty years after those ugly events that saw Charles Taylor come to power, Carter Camp is almost unrecognizable.
Jonathan Paye-Layleh recently visited the site, outside of Liberia's capital, Monrovia, and brings us this dispatch -- part of our Ear To The Ground series.

Music often demonstrates that old notion that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
I mean, Bob Dylan is Bob Dylan...but take away his guitar and harmonica and you might not be as keen on "Rainy Day Women Number 12 and 35". And the same goes double for the legion of Auto-Tuned vocalists whose suspiciously note-perfect voices are all over Top Forty radio right now.
But making the rounds on the Internet today is a recording that goes to show you how surprising, and how beautiful, the parts can be all on their own.
For our Sound Of the Day, this is the original vocal track, laid down by Freddie Mercury and David Bowie, from Queen's 1981 recording of "Under Pressure".

Talk about "under pressure".
Many believe the politically motivated cancellation of two proposed gas-fired power plants in suburban Toronto was behind former Premier Dalton McGuinty's sudden resignation last October. The issue has dogged Ontario's governing Liberal Party for months.
Today, Ontario's Information and Privacy Commissioner released a report that found senior officials in Mr. McGuinty's government deliberately deleted key e-mails related to the scandal -- in violation of provincial law.
Ann Cavoukian is Ontario's Information and Privacy Commissioner. We reached her in Toronto.

I don't know how quite how to say this. No, I really don't know. Or at least I didn't until now.
On Monday, we told you about an EU decision that had made the longest German word obsolete. The word was sixty-three letters long...but believe me, it felt longer.
Let me try it again: "Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgetsetz".
Well, after I tried, Talkback offered some pronunciations that were just Wunderbar.

Say what you will about the world's religions, they have certainly cornered the market on public monuments to devotion. The non-believers: not so much.
But American Atheists are taking the first step to change that. They have unveiled plans to install, in Florida, what they claim is the first public monument in the United States celebrating non-belief.

When songwriters who are talented team up, it doesn't always work out. Take, for example, the group Superheavy, which contained Mick Jagger, Joss Stone, A.R. Rahman, Damian Marley, and Dave Stewart. And I mean, it really contained them. I'll give you five bucks if you can hum a song by Superheavy right now.
But sometimes songwriters team up and do something fantastic. Which is what happened when Melissa McClelland and Luke Doucet became Whitehorse.
Each had success as a solo artist. But after they got married, they decided to become Whitehorse. And the new whole has proven greater than the sum of its parts.
This week, the nominees for the 2013 SOCAN Songwriting Prize were announced. It honours the best song released by a Canadian independent artist over the last year. And the nominees are: Mo Kenney; Purity Ring; Maylee Todd; The Weather Station, featuring Baby Eagle; and...Whitehorse, who are nominated for this song. From their 2012 album "The Fate of the World Depends on This Kiss", this is called "Devil's Got A Gun".
