CHINESE HACKING Duration: 00:07:02

From the outside, it doesn't look like a sophisticated cyber-spy headquarters. But an unassuming office building in Shanghai is being linked to a staggeringly large global hacking operation.

The U.S. computer security firm Mandiant released a report today tracing years of cyber attacks. Mendiant traced the source of the attacks to the doorstep of a special unit of the Chinese military.

Dan McWhorter is managing director at Mandiant's Intel Unit. We reached him in Columbus, Ohio.

CHARBONNEAU UPDATE Duration: 00:07:21

So what's a couple of card games between friends?

Montreal construction entrepreneur, Nicolo Milioto -- commonly known as Mr. Sidewalk due to the tens of millions in sidewalk building contracts he received from the city -- was seen hanging out in the back of Cafe Consenza 236 times on video captured by hidden police cameras.

At today's hearings for Quebec's Charbonneau Commission into corruption, Mr. Milioto said he just went to the known mafia hangout to see his friends and play some cards.

But the video also shows Mr. Milioto exchanging wads of cash with known mobsters, like assassinated godfather Nicolo Rizzuto.

To hear more about Mr. Milioto's testimony we reached Radio Canada investigative reporter Marie-Maude Denis in Montreal.

There are things we tell our doctors, that we wouldn't share with anyone else.

For a refugee claimant, that can include the story of why they fled their home.

Michael Stephenson is a family doctor who treats refugee claimants at Toronto's Access Alliance Multicultural Health and Community Services. Some of his patients are refugee claimants from Mexico. Mexico is now on Immigration Canada's list of so-called "safe" countries.

We've reached Michael Stephenson today in Montreal.

FROM OUR ARCHIVES: LEOPOLD MUSEM NAKED VIEWS Duration: 00:03:21

As Oscar Wilde famously said, "life imitates art."

And so the staff at the Leopold Museum in Vienna might have suspected that it was only a matter of time before their patrons started turning up naked. Which, as a matter of fact, is what happened last night.

It is only the most recent addition to the already controversial history of the exhibit "Nude Men from 1800 to Today," which opened last fall.

Back in October, when the posters advertising the "Nude Men" exhibit started popping up all over Vienna, we spoke with museum spokesman Klaus Pokorny. From our archives, here is part of that interview.

ZEN SCANDAL: FOLO Duration: 00:12:19

Nikki Stubbs had high hopes when she arrived at the Mount Baldy Zen Centre in California. She was about to begin working and studying with Joshu Sasaki Roshi. The Roshi is the 105-year-old leader of an international Zen Buddhist community. Ms. Stubbs had heard about the Roshi's reputation for opening paths to enlightenment for Zen practictioners. But he had another reputation -- one that Ms. Stubbs hadn't heard of.

We heard about that reputation last week from Eshu Martin. He's the Victoria Zen Abbot who taught Nikki Stubbs before she left for Mount Baldy. Afterwards, he made a series of discoveries which prompted him to write a public letter alleging decades of sexual misconduct by Joshu Sasaki Roshi.

We reached Nikki Stubbs in Vancouver.

FOR THE RECORD: IRELAND MAGDALENE APOLOGY Duration: 00:02:47

Today, a long-awaited apology finally came.

It is believed that close to ten thousand women and girls were forced to do unpaid manual labour in Irish Catholic-run laundries starting in the nineteen-twenties. The survivors have long been demanding an apology.

For the record, here is part of what Enda Kenny, the Irish prime minister, said today in the Irish Parliament in Dublin, with several of the Magdalene Laundries Women in attendance:

NORTHERN IRELAND MAGDALENE Duration: 00:06:34

For the record, that was Irish prime minister Enda Kenny apologizing today to those known as the Magdalene Laundries' Women.

But Patrick Corrigan says this apology needs to extend across Ireland's northern border.

Mr. Corrigan has been speaking to women who suffered the same fate at the hands of the Magdalene Laundries in Northern Ireland, where they operated into the nineteen-eighties.

Patrick Corrigan is Northern Ireland's program director for Amnesty International. We reached him in Belfast.

HUMAN RIGHTS WATCH ON RCMP Duration: 00:07:11

It's a controversial report that's provoked debate among researchers and the RCMP.

Human Rights Watch recently released a report alleging police abuse of aboriginal women in Northern, British Columbia. On Friday, the authors of the report met with members of the RCMP in Vancouver, including Deputy Commissioner Doug Lang.

Today in Prince George, members of the Carrier Sekani Tribal Council held a news conference announcing their support of the findings in the Human Rights Watch report.

FTR: HILARY MANTEL ON PRINCESSESJWFEB 19/2013

Pronouncers:

Mantel= Man-TELL

Cambridge= CAME-bridge

JD:These days, it's hard to glance through a newspaper or website, or turn on the news, without seeing some mention of Kate Middleton's pregnancy. Just today, there were reports of the "mommy-to-be's" first public appearance since the royal couple announced their exciting news. But that's not the only news about the princess that's got royal-watchers talking.

Hilary Mantel is a two-time Booker Prize winning author. When asked to speak at a London Review of Books engagment two weeks ago, Ms. Mantel used her hour to discuss the Duchess of Cambridge's image. And she certainly talked up a storm.

Now, depending on which side of the royal/commoner coin you fall on, you might find yourself chastising Ms. Mantel for her comments. Or, you might find yourself nodding in agreement.

For the record, this is author Hilary Mantel speaking at the British Museum in London two weeks ago.

U.S. CARBON TAX Duration: 00:06:38

Among many American conservatives, the word "tax" means the same as, "upatriotic."

Yet some on the Republican side of the Congressional aisle are now lining up behind the idea of a carbon tax, one that would charge a levy for each tonne of carbon dioxide produced.

Why?

Aparna Mathur may have some answers. She's a economist specializing in taxation at the conservative think tank, the American Enterprise Institute. We reached her in Washington, DC.

SOUTH CAROLINA PRIMARIES Duration: 00:06:39

You could call it the race of the famous-by-family name. And in one case, infamous.

They are all among the candidates vying for the vacant House of Representatives seat in the First Congressional District of South Carolina. There is CNN founder and environmental activist Ted Turner's son and Comedian Stephen Colbert's sister. Then add former Governor Mark Sanford, who was once touted as a presidential candidate until it was revealed he'd been having an extramarital affair.

All together, it makes for some interesting politics.

Schuyler Kropf has been covering those politics. He's a reporter at the Post and Courier newspaper in Charleston, South Carolina.

FROM OUR ARCHIVES: PAT DERBY OBIT Duration: 00:03:44

Pat Derby didn't have to imagine what it would be like to talk to the animals. She was fluent in lion, and tiger, and elephant -- to just name a few.

But Ms. Derby didn't just speak to the animals, she spoke for them. She devoted her life to running sanctuaries with the Performing Animal Welfare Society, or PAWS -- the organization she founded with her longtime partner.

Ms. Derby died on Friday of throat cancer. She was sixty-nine.

A former show business animal trainer, Pat Derby helped make stars of "Flipper" the bottlenose dolphin on the popular sixties television series. She also trained "Clarence the Cross-Eyed Lion" and "Judy the Chimpanzee" on the children's show "Daktari", among others.

But she grew increasingly disgusted by the treatment of animals in Hollywood. And so in 1984, she founded PAWS, to advocate for animals in the entertainment industry -- and to provide sanctuary to retired performers, and exotic zoo animals.

In 1976, Pat Derby wrote her autobiography, "The Lady and Her Tiger", which detailed the abuse she'd witnessed of show business animals. And, that December, she spoke with then-As it Happens host Barbara Frum. Here's part of their conversation, from our archives.
