THE HONOURARY SELEBIANS. This weekend, Canadian airmen and women will receive an honourary membership to an ancient order. Its called Ye Fraternitie of Olde Selebians. And normally, it's only awarded to people who come from Selby, a small town in the north of England.
STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN: 40 YEARS ON. One of the most enduring songs of all time, by one of the most legendary acts of all time: Led Zeppelin. It has thrilled rock fans ever since. It has also confused millions of slow-dancing teenagers at high school dances. And it's been covered a few times. Here are just a few of those versions -- starting with Led Zeppelin's.
EU AFGHAN FILM BLOCKED. The story of Gulnaz will not be screened. The European Union has blocked the release of a documentary called In Justice -- a documentary the E.U. itself commissioned and paid for. The film is an unflinching account of women caught in the Afghan justice system -- including nineteen-year-old Gulnaz. She was handed a twelve-year prison sentence for adultery -- because she was raped.
JEFFERSON COUNTY BANKRUPT. In Jefferson County, Alabama, officials have had to close down several court houses, stop maintaining roads -- and even stop sending the sheriff out to car accidents. All because of budget problems. Now, things are about to get worse. This week, the county filed for bankruptcy protection, in response to a crippling four-billion-dollar debt -- the biggest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history. And it all started out with a sewer system that needed fixing.
FOR YOUR TOMORROW. The fighting has stopped, but the grieving hasn't. In 2007, when Melanie Murray's nephew, Jeff Francis, was killed along with five other soldiers by a roadside bomb, she dealt with her grief by writing about Jeff. Her book is called For Your Tomorrow, The Way of An Unlikely Soldier.
