In Natuashish, a time of change. And a time for things to stay the same.
On Friday, the Innu Nation town in northern Labrador held a vote on
whether to lift the two-year-old ban on alcohol. The community's new
chief, Simeon Tshakapesh, called for a review of prohibition shortly
after his election in early March. Last week, he held a public meeting,
after which he called for a vote on the issue. More than three-hundred
residents cast their votes -- and when the results came in Friday
evening, the decision was clear: alcohol was out.

She fought her entire life to do something most of us take for granted.
Eva Markvoort was born with cystic fibrosis, and while she struggled
every day to breathe, those who knew her say she lived vibrantly. She
kept a blog that documented her struggle with cystic fibrosis, and drew
thousands of readers. She was hailed as a beacon of hope, and received
the Summerhayes award from the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Association.
Eva Markvoort passed away on Saturday morning in Vancouver. She was a few days short of twenty-six.
Nimisha Mukerji is a Vancouver-based filmmaker. Last year, her
documentary on Eva's struggles with cystic fibrosis won the audience
award at the Vancouver International Film Festival. We reached Ms.

In nineteen-sixties Quebec, a new kind of pop musician emerged. In
fact, a whole bunch of them emerged. They flooded the stages in Quebec,
Montreal, and Trois-Rivieres. They were funny, they were irreverant, and
most of all, they were political.
They were called "chansonniers" -- and one of them was called Robert Charlebois.
By the late 'sixties, Monsieur Charlebois had developed the persona of
"Superfrog". That meant that he wore Canadiens hockey sweaters, and
sang in joual -- Quebecois slang that incorporates bilingualisms.
Listeners in French Canada fell in love with him -- and across the pond,
so did the non-Canadian French.
Last night, Canadians renewed that love. Mr. Charlebois was inducted
into the Canadian Songwriters' Hall of Fame. He joined the rock legends
Rush -- featuring my former schoolmate Neil Peart. But that's a story
for another time. Right now, here's Robert Charlebois with his 1969
song, "Les Ailes d'un Ange".

It was a brutal massacre. And for months, it went unreported.
For four days last December, members of the Lord's Resistance Army
rebel group in Uganda killed more than three hundred men, women, and
children in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Two-hundred-and-fifty more were abducted, including at least eighty
children. The massacre has just come to light thanks to a report
released this weekend by Human Rights Watch. Members of the N-G-O were
on a fact-finding mission to the area in February, when they learned of
the extent of the massacre.

It's not often that plant food becomes a controversial issue. But the
legal high, mephedrone, which is marketed as plant food, has been
dominating headlines in the UK.
A recent spate of deaths by users of the substance has sparked calls
to ban it -- and it seems the British government has been listening.
Today, Home Secretary Alan Johnson announced that mephedrone and its
related compounds would be banned, and that the drug would be classified
as a class B drug, like cannabis and some amphetamines.
When we spoke to Paul Dargan, a clinical toxicologist with Guy's and
St. Thomas's Hospital in London last week, he told us that the effect
and toxicity of the drug was similar to that of stimulant drugs such as
ecstasy and cocaine.
One of the biggest concerns relating to mephedrone has been the ease
of availability of the drug over the Internet. To combat this problem,
Mr. Johnson announced that an immediate ban would be placed on the
importing of mephedrone -- and any incoming shipments would be
Earlier today, the Guardian newspaper in England spoke to an anonymous
mephedrone dealer about the expected ban. Here is an excerpt from that

Ms. Ramirez told us the company has used violence to intimidate

Last year we told you of the story of Gao Zhisheng. He's a prominent
lawyer who got on the bad side of the Chinese authorities after he
started defending Falun Gong members, underground Christian groups, and
farmers evicted from their land.
His wife and two children escaped China by land into Thailand, where
they were granted asylum in the United States. Shortly after, Gao went
for a walk -- and vanished.
Then yesterday, he resurfaced... under circumstances that are just as mysterious as his disappearance.

That's a clip from Ridley Scott's epic 2000 film, "Gladiator". A film
so successful, it not only won five Oscars that year, including Best
Picture and Best Actor for Russell Crowe, it also spawned the term "The
Gladiator Effect" -- which the New York Times credited for a renewed
literary interest in all things ancient and Roman.
And although it's probably as close as most of us will get -- or want
to get -- to a real gladiator fight, one German university intends to
take its re-creation program to a whole new level. It's recruited
twenty-two students to partake in what is surely the modern world's
first-ever gladiator school.
Josef Loffl is a professor of history at the University of Regensburg, and the coordinator of the school's gladiator project.
