MISSING WOMAN FOUND Duration: 00:07:05

That's the voice of one of Donna O'Reilly's daughters, speaking last week in Moncton. Her fifty-four year-old mother went missing in on February 26th. Since then, the story of her disappearance has gripped the province of New Brunswick. And hundreds of tips to the RCMP have provided few details.

But all of that changed this afternoon. Ms. O'Reilly was found alive and a man has been arrested in the case.

Brian Cormier is a columnist with the Moncton Times And Transcript newspaper. He's been following the story of Ms. O'Reilly's disappearance. We reached him at his home earlier today.

NB QUE HYDRO DEAL DEAD Duration: 00:07:05

It was never a popular deal.

When New Brunswick's government agreed last October to sell N-B Power assets to Hydro Quebec, Premier Shawn Graham knew he faced some political risks. Two of his fellow Maritime premiers were unhappy about how the deal might affect their own access to electricity. Premier Graham's government also faced a political backlash at home, with many New Brunswickers upset about the sale of the Crown corporation. But in the end, it was financial risk that finally killed the deal. Today, Premier Graham announced that, because of an irreconcilable dispute over who would accept that financial risk, the multi-billion dollar sale was dead.

Jack Keir is New Brunswick's Minister of Energy. He is in Fredericton.

FOA: 30th ANNIV ROMERO Duration: 00:04:20

He was one of the most loved and most hated figures in El Salvador.

From his pulpit, Archbishop Oscar Romero spoke out against the human-rights violations he saw occurring in his country during the nineteen-seventies. He championed the rights of the poor, and defended their demands for political change -- much to the anger of the ruling right-wing oligarchy. His sermons fuelled the slogan "Be a patriot - kill a priest", and left the Archbishop a marked man.

Thirty years ago today, while giving mass in the nation's capital, Archbishop Romero was assassinated. His murder, and the violent clashes that his funeral sparked, became a turning point that led El Salvador into a bitter civil war -- which resulted in the deaths of some seventy thousand people.

One day after the Archbishop's violent funeral, Barbara Frum spoke with New York Times correspondent Joseph Treaster. He had been one of the estimated two-hundred-and-fifty thousand people in attendance. Here is an excerpt from that interview, which was conducted on March thirty-first, 1980 -- from our archive.

HAWLEY ELECTION Duration: 00:05:55

As most electoral candidates and canvassers are quick to remind us, it's vitally important to "get out the vote". But in one small Massachussetts town, it's not voter apathy that is frustrating the democratic process -- but candidate apathy.

Elections in the hamlet of Hawley, nestled in the Berkshires, are slated for May 3rd. With only three-hundred-and-thirty-six residents, turnout on the day promises to be small. What's less promising, however, is that with the deadline to register as a candidate having passed, no one has officially declared an intention to run.

Cyndie Stetson is Hawley's town clerk .

REASONABLE ACCOMODATION LAW Duration: 00:07:14

What's considered reasonable is subjective. But today the Quebec government made it clear what it thinks is unreasonable -- wearing the niqab in schools, hospitals, and government offices.

The provincial government put forward legislation that would prevent Muslim women from wearing face coverings while they are delivering or receiving a range of public services. Kathleen Weil is Quebec's Minister of Justice. We reached her in Quebec City.

PASSOVER V. HOCKEY Duration: 00:05:51

Apparently, in Montreal, it's easier to arrange the exodus of a people from Egypt than move a minor hockey playoff game.

That's the message a hockey team was given, after it asked to reschedule a game that was to be played on the first night of Passover, next Monday. The parents and players of the Dollard des Ormeaux Midget B Civics will now be forced to forfeit their regional semi-final game, because ten out of its fifteen players are Jewish, and unwilling to miss the Seder. Even though another team offered to switch places with them.

Eva Lynne Gross is the manager of the team. We reached her in Montreal.

PRONOUNCER:

Yuri Luzhkov = YOO-ree LUGE-koff

The ninth of May is an important date in the Russian collective consciousness. It marks the capitulation of Nazi Germany to the Soviet Union, after a long and especially brutal fight, along one of the bloodiest fronts of the Second World War. The Russians -- then Soviets -- paid for their victory in human lives, suffering the largest death toll of any country that fought in the war.

Which, is why, on May ninth -- Victory Day -- it's understandable that Russia celebrates its national holiday with a conspicuous display of military might paraded through Red Square. What isn't so understandable is the addition Moscow mayor, Yuri Luzhkov, would like to see incorporated into this year's celebration: giant posters of Josef Stalin.

Mayor Luzhkov suggests that Stalin ought to get props for leading Russia to freedom. We suggest the Mayor sit down and do a little math.

Russia lost something like twenty-seven million citizens as a result of the war. It's a staggering figure, but that one that was likely matched by Stalin himself. Some have estimated the total deaths under Stalin's rule at nearly sixty million, although twenty million may be more realistic. Whatever the numbers, one thing is clear: Josef Stalin is a more appropriate poster boy for butchery and repression than for Russia's liberation.

Trying to arrest someone for a crime is a difficult undertaking, particularly when you're not a policeman. Just ask Irish journalist David Cronin. He had no luck whatsoever with the citizen's arrest he tried? but then again, he was aiming pretty high when he tried to arrest former British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

MEPHEDRONE BAN Duration: 00:07:51

The three of recent deaths of young people in the U.K. have brought a new danger to light. It's called "mephedrone". And it's plant food.

Regardless of its intended use, mephedrone has fast become the recreational drug of choice in Britain's club culture. And what's especially alarming is that the drug is legal, and easily available. Many groups are calling for the substance to be banned -- and it is believed the country's drug advisory board will recommend the same, in meetings with the government next week.

Dr. Paul Dargan is the clinical toxicologist for St. Guys and St Thomas' Hospital in London, England. He has witnessed firsthand the effect of the drug on users. We reached him in London.

CONDO BEEKEEPING Duration: 00:06:29

It was a sweet victory for wanna-be beekeepers in New York City.

Last week, the Big Apple overturned a longtime ban on beekeeping within city limits. New Yorkers who aren't allergic to bee stings rejoiced. But Vancouverites just sniffed: beekeeping has been legal there for years.

Recently, Vancouver resident Zeljka Turek decided she wanted to take advantage of that policy. She ordered some bees, and registered with the Ministry of Agriculture -- and she was ready to make honey. But once she set up her hive in the rooftop garden of her condominium, she ran into trouble: her condo board served her bees with an eviction notice. And she thinks that's a-pollen.

We reached Zeljka Turek in Vancouver.

TB/EMAIL: TAIWAN SLOGAN Duration: 00:04:56

Taiwan is in the middle of a baby bust. So the Taiwanese government is exhorting its citizens to get busy getting busy.

Since the actual work of procreating is such an unbearable slog, officials are offering one million Taiwan dollars -- about thirty-two thousand Canadian dollars -- to the person who comes up with a slogan that will shame fellow citizens into making future taxpayers.

Of course, we thought Talkback might have a few suggestions. So we sprinkled some rose petals around the phone, put on a Barry White record, and waited. And Talkback responded with ardour.
