The Good Citizens
From CBC Archives, an exploration of Chinese-Canadian identity in 1960s Canada. The two-part documentaryThe Good Citizens originally aired in August 1964 on the Vancouver-produced series Camera West. The title is attributed to the idea that despite the prejudice directed against them in earlier decades, Chinese-Canadians had proven to be "good citizens."
The selected episode, Search for the Past
(runs 8:00) explores the impact of modern life and social concerns on Chinese-Canadian identity as well as the history of anti-Chinese prejudice in western North America and the Chinese response. The subject is examined from the viewpoint of young Chinese-Canadian Bob Lee, with comments from several other interviewees. Includes footage of Vancouver's Chinatown by day.
