2003
Canada Winter Games National Artists Program
Young
artists, actors, dancers and musicians from across Canada converged
at the 2003 Canada Winter Games in New Brunswick. They worked together
to create "Celebrate the Magic", a gala performance showing
case their wide-ranging talents.
The show was about how we Canadians face tough winters with grace,
while keeping our country's cultural richness alive. It included
some surprising science-fiction elements, original costumes and
exceptional multimedia effects.
Participants in the National Artists' Program stayed in the Athletes'
Village. They brought with them themed creative works and ideas
they had prepared in advance. Rehearsals and production work for
the gala began as soon as they arrived.
CBC ARTSPOTS producer Bob Mersereau spent time with these emerging
artists and produced a documentary on how this exciting Gala
Performance came together.
This
cultural aspect of the 2003 Canada Winter Games is coordinated by
the 2003 Canada Winter Games Host Society.
Three
emerging artists from Manitoba, Katie
Mordarski , Karen
Musey and Christine
Cooper who were participating in the program also wrote
diaries on the web about their experiences.
