The audience gave a rousing standing ovation before Rent began its last performance on Broadway in New York City.

The play — a modern retelling of Puccini's La Boheme — closed Sunday night after 12 years and 5,124 performances.

Rent, born off-Broadway, is a tale of tragedy and triumph.

"Like we did when we opened, we dedicate this performance to Jonathan Larson," said actor Adam Kantor, referring to the playwright who wrote the show's book, music and lyrics.

Larson was 35 when he died of an aortic aneurysm after the show's final dress rehearsal in January 1996. He was not able to experience Rent's soaring success.

"I still can't believe Jonathan is dead … I feel bad that he isn't here to enjoy what he did," said Allan S. Gordon, one of the show's producers.

Rent closed with an electric version of one of its best-known songs, Seasons of Love, with members of the original company onstage with the current set of performers.

"There's mixed emotions, but it's time," noted Gordon.

Not defined by age

The tale of artists and street people struggling and uniting in an AIDS- and drug-plagued East Village during the 1990s touched thousands of fans, some of whom saw the show many times over. They dubbed themselves Rent Heads.

"Rent was not defined by age," noted Gordon. "People of all ages loved it. That's why it survived."

The show grossed more than $280 million US during its run, collecting an army of Tonys and Obies, and a Pulitzer Prize.

"In my mind, it's simply the message," said original cast member Gwen Stewart.

"There is a universal truth that I think everyone can identity with: Living today to the fullest because you don't know if tomorrow will be promised to you. Live. Love. Laugh. We have all gone through loss."

The show isn't dead yet. A tour begins in January with several members of the original cast. The Broadway show was also filmed in high definition and will be screened in North American theatres at the end of September.

A 2005 movie version directed by Chris Columbus starred many of the original cast members.
