Concert competition strikes a chord

Last Updated: Friday, July 30, 2010 | 12:42 PM ET

Though the Maritimes will host a number of festivals and concerts this holiday weekend, organizers aren't worried they'll lose fans to other events.

They say the more concerts, the better.

Mike Babineau, who's getting ready to kick off FredRock in the New Brunswick capital Friday night, said different festivals cater to different audiences.

He also said there's a good relationship between organizers.

For example, the recent Evolve festival in Nova Scotia helped entice customers to FredRock. Organizers of the Fredericton event were allowed to distribute flyers and pamphlets at the Antigonish festival.

"The same thing with the Halifax Rocks," Babineau explained. "We were down there last weekend as well handing out pamphlets."

In addition to preparations for FredRock, other organizers have been getting ready for SappyFest in Sackville, N.B., and Natal Day concerts in Halifax.

These Maritime events do have some stiff competition this weekend from the Osheaga Festival in Montreal, which will feature acts like Metric, Weezer and Arcade Fire.

Jon Claytor, a SappyFest organizer, suggested even the Osheaga Festival offers benefits for this region. Claytor said some of his acts are also playing at Osheaga, which likely helped bring them to Sackville.

"It makes it a lot cheaper for them to come out here, which means that we can get better known bands," Claytor said. "If they can play a few festivals on the same weekend, it makes it worthwhile for them to come from the U.S. or from Vancouver."

Music fans should have good weather for the shows. The forecast calls for sun all weekend.
