Prolific TV and film actress Wendy Crewson will be the latest Canadian performer to be honoured with ACTRA Toronto's award of excellence.
The Toronto branch of the Canadian performance union announced Friday that Crewson was the 2007 winner. Past recipients have included Gordon Pinsent, Paul Gross, Sarah Polley and Sonja Smits.
The actress, who recently joined the cast of TV's ReGenesis, will receive her award at the organization's annual gala in February.
"Wendy Crewson is so deserving of this honour for her ongoing contributions to our film and television industry — both as an award-winning actor and as a star who graciously leads the fight for our culture," Karl Pruner, president of ACTRA Toronto Performers, said in a statement.
An ardent activist supporting the creation of more Canadian programming, Crewson is a Gemini Award-winner and a familiar face on television, with her many credits including 24, Sex Traffic, At the End of the Day: The Sue Rodriguez Story, The Matthew Shepard Story and The Many Trials of One Jane Doe.
The actress has also maintained a bustling film career, with performances in movies such as Polley's Away from Her, due for theatrical release this coming spring, as well as What Lies Beneath, Air Force One, To Gillian on Her 37th Birthday and the Santa Clause franchise.
Crewson will be seen on CBC-TV in January, starring opposite Mary-Louise Parker in the film adaptation of Margaret Atwood's The Robber Bride.
ACTRA Toronto represents more than 13,000 of the organization's total membership of 21,000 performers across Canada.
In addition to its award of excellence, the organization's Feb. 23 gala will present juried prizes recognizing outstanding male, female and voice performances over the past year.
