A new competition designed to celebrate Canada's best photojournalism was unveiled Friday.
The inaugural Pictures of the Year competition, sponsored by the News Photographers Association of Canada, will recognize the best images captured by professional and student photojournalists during 2006.
The new competition was born out of the merger of regional contests run by the Eastern Canadian News Photographers Association and the Western Canadian News Photographers Association.
Members of both associations — which include freelancers working around the world and staff photographers from news outlets such as the Globe and Mail, the Winnipeg Free Press and the Daily News in Halifax — are eligible to compete for the new prize.
Awards will be presented in 12 categories, ranging from spot news to student portfolio of the year, as well as the prestigious Canadian photojournalist of the year and Canadian photograph of the year titles.
After the submission deadline of Jan. 31, 2007, a five-member panel will judge the entries and announce the top three finalists in each category in March.
The winners will be announced during the Western Canadian News Photographers Association convention in Vancouver on April 28.
Organizers are also planning to send the winning images on a cross-Canada tour in late 2007.
