Furtado scores Teen Choice honours as K-Fed delivers TV rap debut

Last Updated: Monday, August 21, 2006 | 1:03 PM ET

Canadian pop singer Nelly Furtado scored three trophies at the Teen Choice Awards, a celebrity-studded event in Southern California that included the first network TV performance by fledgling rapper Kevin Federline.

Furtado took home three surfboard-shaped trophies from Sunday night's gala, including for choice song of the summer for Promiscuous, her radio-friendly hit featuring hip hop producer Timbaland.

The evening's big winner was the summer blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, which won seven trophies for categories including choice action adventure movie, choice summer movie and choice rumble.

The myriad of Teen Choice categories recognize favourites in the worlds of television, movies, music and sports. Winners are picked via online voting by fans.

Star Johnny Depp won two performance honours, one for his action-packed turn in Pirates and another for his children's comedy Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Rockers Fall Out Boy also took multiple honours, including choice single and choice rock track for the hit Dance, Dance.

While accepting the choice love song trophy for What's Left of Me, pop crooner Nick Lachey delighted the audience with his admission the evening felt uncomfortable. The winning song was inspired by his highly publicized break up with singer Jessica Simpson, who was co-hosting the awards show.

"I just want to start off by saying, awkward? A little bit," he said.

The former couple, whose early married life played out for audiences on the MTV reality show Newlyweds, never appeared together onstage.

Wide-ranging categories, perennial winners

Other winners spanned a list of perennial Teen Choice favourites, including:

  • Reese Witherspoon (choice actress for Walk the Line).
  • Ashton Kutcher (choice TV personality for Punk'd).
  • Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock (choice liplock for their romantic film The Lake House).
  • Adam Sandler (choice comedian).

Though there are some mainstays, the categories often change each year to reflect current offerings and fashions.

For instance, this year's choice grill award (won by Brooke Hogan, daughter of professional wrestler Hulk Hogan) honoured the trend of wearing the so-called ornamental metal decorations across one's front teeth.

Federline offers energetic closer

Furtado, who was born in Victoria, performed her chart-topper Promiscuous with Timbaland during the ceremony, which also saw artists like teen singer Rihanna and Federline take to the stage.

Federline's performance, which organizers slotted as the show closer, was the most anticipated of the evening. His pregnant, pop star wife, Britney Spears, served as presenter.

"This show has been very good to me and my career over the years," she said, snapping a wad of chewing gum and giggling. "I'm hoping that it will be as good to our next performer."

Federline, dubbed K-Fed by the tabloids, delivered an enthusiastic, profanity-laced performance of his single Lose Control, which had several words bleeped out by broadcaster Fox.

The former back-up dancer, who bounced around the stage but refrained from actual dance moves, is expected to release his debut hip hop album Play With Fire in October.

Critical reaction to his performance has ranged from "wasn't half-bad" to comparisons to scorned 1990s rapper Vanilla Ice.
