Winnipeg comic artist helps continue Star Wars tale

Last Updated: Wednesday, May 18, 2005 | 2:51 PM ET

After Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith hits the screen, the stage will be set for a Winnipeg illustrator to continue the Star Wars saga.

Doug Wheatley, illustrator of the four-edition comic book of Revenge of the Sith, is working on a comic series that will continue the story.

Wheatley, 36, works out of a Winnipeg studio on contract with Dark Horse Comics.

"They talk about all kinds of generations, there is X generation and all this other stuff but I'm the Star Wars generation," Wheatley says.

Two years ago Dark Horse offered him the opportunity to create a four-issue edition of Revenge of the Sith, the third story in George Lucas's six-part Star Wars series.

"When the opportunity came and I was told I could do it, I mean, I just was floored. I was walking on cloud nine," he says.

Lucas says the movie, opening Thursday at cinemas throughout Canada, will be the last in the series. But a television series and cartoon are planned, and Dark Horse has won the rights to continue the story for a new generation of young readers.

Wheatley is working on a two-issue series called Into the Unknown, written by Welles Hartley. A confidentiality agreement prevents him from releasing details of the next creation, but Wheatley could reveal when the story is set.

"The story I am working on right now takes place 36 hours after the film and it's dealing with some story points from the film."

In the past, Wheatley has worked for Marvel on titles such as Marvel Fanfare and Jack of Hearts, as well as for other publishers, including DC, Eclipse and Image.

His first Star Wars-related assignment was Star Wars Bounty Hunters: Kenix Kil, for Dark Horse and he has since illustrated covers for Empire #19 and #20.
