Wingham, Ont. - There was a rare Alice Munro sighting Wednesday when the writer returned to her hometown of Wingham for the grand opening of the Alice Munro Literary Garden.
Over the course of her writing career, Munro has made a point of staying out of the spotlight, to the point where she's even turned down honorary degrees and other large awards.
Her publisher said Munro considered this honour something special because it came from Wingham.
"Alice will always be a part of Wingham's heritage," added Verna Steffler, president of the Wingham and District Horticultural Society, which created the Alice Munro Literary Garden in the Huron County community northwest of Stratford, Ont.
The garden is circled by a walk with inlaid stones noting the awards she has won and books she has written. "And we've left a few spaces for future books," Steffler said.
Munro, 71, has won 3 Governor General's Awards and a Giller Prize for her writing.
