Elton John has cancelled another concert on short notice as he continues to recover from the flu.

The 62-year-old performer already called off a Friday show at Sheffield Arena in central England and has now scuttled a Saturday show at Newcastle's Metro Radio Arena.

"The crowds are always great music fans and not being able to this special show for Newcastle is upsetting," John's spokesman told the BBC on Saturday.

He added the star, whose hits include Benny and the Jets, Candle in the Wind, I'm Still Standing, Rocket Man and Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me, had to call off Saturday's event on the advice of doctors.

On Friday, he had said he hoped he could perform after a night's rest.

The singer's next show on his schedule is at London's Wembley Arena on Tuesday, followed by Liverpool's Echo Arena on Wednesday. There's no word yet on those concerts.

Ticket holders have been told to hang on to their stubs and await an announcement on Monday for possible make-up shows or a refund.
