Dutch conductor de Waart to take baton of Milwaukee Symphony

Edo de Waart, chief conductor and artistic director of the Hong Kong Philharmonic, will also become music director of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra.
The Dutch-born conductor was named Thursday as successor to Andreas Delfs, who will leave after the 2008-2009 season.
He makes his Milwaukee Symphony subscription concert debut in April.
De Waart will serve as music director designate during the 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 seasons and plans to continue with the Hong Kong Philharmonic through 2012.
He also took up the post of chief conductor of the Santa Fe Opera this October. He first conducted opera in Sante Fe in 1971.
De Waart was born in Amsterdam and was recognized early as a conducting talent, serving as assistant conductor to Leonard Bernstein at the New York Philharmonic in 1964.
He has been music director and conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic and the Netherlands Wind Ensemble and music director of the San Francisco Symphony.
He was chief conductor and artistic adviser of the Sydney Symphony from 1995 to 2004 and joined the Hong Kong Philharmonic in 2004. He is also conductor laureate of the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest Holland.
De Waart is married to American mezzo-soprano Rebecca Dopp and the couple live in Madison, Wisc.
