Spice Girls still hot: pop troupe's London show sells out in 38 seconds

Last Updated: Monday, October 1, 2007 | 2:24 PM ET

Nearly a decade after the Spice Girls last performed together as a quintet, the pop divas are still apparently a hot ticket in the U.K.

Promoters of the group's upcoming reunion world tour announced Monday that tickets for the London show at the O2 Arena in December had sold out in approximately 38 seconds.

More than one million people registered for tickets to the Dec. 15 show, but the arena has a seating capacity of only 20,000.

Successful applicants were informed they had secured tickets via text message or e-mail Sunday.

On Monday, tickets began popping up on auction website eBay, some for more than £700 (about $1,400).

Because of the fervent demand, organizers have added additional London dates: Dec. 16, Dec. 18 and Jan. 2.

The tour begins Dec. 2 in Vancouver, with the original members Victoria Beckham (Posh), Emma Bunton (Baby), Melanie Brown (Scary), Melanie Chisholm (Sporty) and Geri Halliwell (Ginger) set to touch down for concerts around the globe.

The band is set for Canadian stops in Vancouver and Toronto, with other concerts to include Los Angeles, New York, Beijing, Cape Town, Madrid, Sydney and Buenos Aires.

The group announced the reunion tour in June, about nine years after Halliwell left the group, which disbanded soon afterward.

In the years since, each member has pursued a solo career and all but Chisholm have become mothers. However, none has achieved the level of success the group had during its mid-1990s heyday, when it sold more than 50 million records worldwide.

A Spice Girls greatest hits album will also be released in November, prior to the start of the tour.
