British singer Lily Allen suffers miscarriage

Last Updated: Friday, January 18, 2008 | 4:58 PM ET

Outspoken British pop singer Lily Allen has suffered a miscarriage, a representative for the 22-year-old confirmed Friday.

Allen, who rose to fame through internet buzz generated by her MySpace social networking page, had been expecting her first child with her 39-year-old boyfriend Ed Simons, a member of Grammy-winning electronic duo the Chemical Brothers.

"She and her partner Ed Simons will be making no further comment. And we ask that their privacy be respected during this difficult time," said a spokesperson for the couple.

Daughter of U.K. actor Keith Allen and film producer Alison Owen, the singer announced her pregnancy in December and had reportedly given up her partying lifestyle.

Calling her own childhood a "whirlwind upbringing" in an interview with U.K. newspaper The Sun, Allen also said that she had her "eye on the prize, which is having kids and getting married and cooking dinner and doing homework with my children."

Allen scored a hit in 2006 with her song Smile, off her debut album Alright, Still — a nominee for best alternative music album in next month's Grammy Awards.

The singer's sophomore album is scheduled for release later this year, as is the debut of a BBC show she is slated to host.

Allen fans flooded her MySpace page on Friday with messages of condolence and sympathy.
