Arcade Fire and Final Fantasy score Richard Kelly's film The Box

The Box, the new feature by cult writer-director Richard Kelly (Donnie Darko, Southland Tales), arrives in theatres this Friday. Judging from the trailer, which features Cameron Diaz doing an execrable imitation of a Southern accent, the film has the potential to be a bit of a disaster. The Box does have one thing going for it, however: a fascinatingly moody score, courtesy of a Canadian musical dream team made up of indie rock heroes the Arcade Fire and violindie ace Owen "Final Fantasy" Pallett.

The trailer doesn't do their evocative -- and strangely oceanic -- soundscapes justice, but a teaser snippet of the score was posted on the official Box website a little while back. Have a listen:

Though the Arcade Fire were rumoured to be working on The Box about a year and a half ago, founder Win Butler was cagey about confirming their participation in the project. From the sounds of it, the film's director worked very hard to court the lauded Montreal-based band. As Kelly explains in an interesting entry on MTV's movie blog, the original spark for their eventual collaboration was planted after he saw the Arcade Fire's performance at the Hollywood Bowl back in 2007.

According to Kelly, the Arcade Fire crew is holding off on releasing a proper Box soundtrack for the time being. As he wrote on Twitter, "I want to clarify a few things about THE BOX score by Win Butler, Regine Chassagne and @OwenPallett...The band is hard at work recording the new Arcade Fire album. They will release the score at some point, when it does not conflict with their album release schedule for their record label. We all hope that their fans will discover the score the old-fashioned way: sitting in a dark movie theater on 11/6/09."

Pallett demonstrated a characteristically nerdy sense of humour in his tweeted response: "@JRichardKelly It's our own personal tribute to the Blade Runner soundtrack. We'll put it out in 2041. Okay witchu?"

Of course, the even more exciting thing to come out of all this Box brouhaha has to be the news that the Arcade Fire are working on their follow-up to 2007's Neon Bible. The website TwentyFourBit has helpfully compiled some info on the potential 2010 release of an AF album. All I'll say is that when I chatted with Arcade Fire multi-instrumentalist Richard Reed Parry a couple weeks ago, he hinted that he was working on some wild arrangements for the record with a crew of string players in New York City.
