Kanye overshadows Gaga, Madonna, King of Pop at MTV VMAs

arts-kanye-swift-cp-392.jpg

Last night's MTV Video Music Awards were a bit of a gong show, but not necessarily for the reasons we were expecting. For weeks, pop oddball Lady Gaga promised fans and media rubberneckers that the performance she was planning for the VMAs would blow our collective minds. She claimed her vision was "rooted in New York-style performance art," and that she'd been planning the stunt for "months and months."

Gaga did her best to commandeer everyone's attention right off the bat, surprising folks on the red carpet with her choice of date. While Muppet-human relationships are strange to begin with, Gaga's decision to make out with Kermit the Frog was even more unnerving given that she recently decapitated a colony of Kermie clones for one of her insane outfits. One feared that by night's end, her escort might suffer the same tragic fate.

Her performance of the single Paparazzi (at the end of a medley of singles) was certainly histrionic. While Gaga's fond of name-checking Andy Warhol, I'm not sure there was a clear link between her gory shtick and the stylized, deadpan work produced in the late artist's Factory. The Paparazzi stunt found Gaga in a blonde poodle wig, oozing blood from her chest as she staggered and stuttered, pretending to have been mortally wounded while dancers clad in white spandex looked on.

It was a grotesque display that combined elements of Carrie, Rocky Horror, Sunset Boulevard and, er, Angels In America. And I'm not entirely sure that it worked.

Unfortunately for Gaga, her forced attempts to court controversy were overshadowed by a number of less contrived moments.

I often wince when Madonna tries to talk about Serious Things -- at this point in her career, the seasoned performer often seems a bit too smug in her gravitas, like she expects mere mortals to hang off her every word, even when she's spouting nonsense. But last night, Madge had a rapt audience for her quiet, respectful tribute to Michael Jackson. I'm not sure that Ms. Ciccone was responsible for writing every word of her 6-minute speech, but she certainly managed to convey a personal connection to the King of Pop. I'm sure more than a few people in the crowd welled up when Madonna compared her experience growing up without a mother to the ways in which being thrust into the limelight at an early age stole Jackson's childhood from him; "I think he got the short end of the stick," she ruefully conceded.

But in the end, the thing we'll probably remember most about the 2009 MTV VMAs is a spectacularly stupid stunt. Carrying on his grand tradition of bum-rushing the stage during other folks' time to shine, rapper/producer/fashion maven Kanye West interrupted country ingenue Taylor Swift while she was accepting her trophy for Best Female Video. "Taylor, I'm really happy for you, and I'm'a let you finish," he blasted, "but Beyonce had one of the best videos of all time!"

Poor Swift looked crestfallen. To her credit, when Beyonce later nabbed a Video of the Year award for Single Ladies, she brought the young country music singer onstage for a speech do-over. And Kanye? Seems folks are getting tired of his outspoken antics. The crowd booed every time the guy's name was mentioned for the remainder of the show.

As is his wont, West posted a message (in all caps, natch) after the dust settled, apologizing to Swift (and her mom) for his rude behaviour:

"I'M SOOOOO SORRY TO TAYLOR SWIFT AND HER FANS AND HER MOM. I SPOKE TO HER MOTHER RIGHT AFTER AND SHE SAID THE SAME THING MY MOTHER WOULD'VE SAID. SHE IS VERY TALENTED!"

UPDATE: Kanye has taken down the original all-caps apology from his blog. It's been replaced by a somewhat sheepish statement:

I feel like Ben Stiller in "Meet the Parents" when he messed up everything and Robert De Niro asked him to leave... That was Taylor's moment and I had no right in any way to take it from her. I am truly sorry.

Five bucks says an assistant (or a publicist) intervened in the hopes of cleaning up West's giant mess. Seriously -- when was the last time Kanye posted anything that wasn't SHOUTED IN CAPITAL LETTERS?

YOUR VIEW: Social outbursts: Should public figures display better manners?

Are you over Kanye? Mesmerized by Madonna? Grossed out by Gaga? What were your most memorable moments of the 2009 MTV VMAs?

His blog entry, when read in its entirety, was a rationalizing mess, boiling down to "I was right but I shouldn't have done it"...it was a self-serving attempt at damage control, not an apology.

So, unless and until I hear of a sincere and unqualified apology from him, I hope this latest blunder is a career killer for him.

Kanye is a bully. No way he does this if someone other than Taylor is up there. Lady Gaga would have kicked him in his tiny man pills. MTV is "appearing" to be upset with him but I am sure they are loving the exposure.

Its time MTV and the Music Ind. takes a stand about the child like actions of stars like Sir Kayne they promote.

Hello! MTV VP's please ban the falling star from your network and future Tv Events. If you don't he will continue to take kindness for weakness.

Imagine if someone else had rushed the stage to "dis" his award- if he has ever gotten one. The outcry over such behavior would be deafening. WHAT A JERK! He should be banned from the awards ceremony until he learns to behave which probably will never happen based on one fo his song titles.

I think celebrities are a joke. Who cares about Kayne West, what has he done for the world? Far to much money and fame for these people for doing very little. You know who should be famous, the team at University of Western Ontario who a couple month ago may have invented a vaccine for AIDS. Those people are important, but we don't know who they are now do we. But when Kayne West interrupts a young country music stars speech, it's worth mentioning his name in the news.

It's not the media's fault for this, the vast majority of people enjoy losing themselves in celebrity exploits and gossip. The world sure could use some more "famous people" who have actually accomplished something beneficial. Not to say the Arts are not beneficial, but they are very mediocre in the grand scheme of things.

Just my opinion.

Its too bad that Kanye's big talent (and its a bit myopic to deny that he's talented) is overbalanced by his infinitely bigger ego and arrogance - what a jackass!

Kudos to Beyoncé, who showed real class, kindness, and sisterhood. Her introduction of Taylor Swift showed that she hasn't forgotten what its like to be a young artist, and how much this king of recongition can mean to someone just staring their career.

The Kanye incident was all an act from the beginning. A-list celebrities are not idiots and they have massive marketing teams behind them who dream up these viral marketing schemes. MTV has their own marketing teams who were most definitely in on the act. From the beginning of the program it was planned for Kanye to have the bottle of Hennessy on the red carpet to give him a reason to do something stupid. The outburst was set at exactly the right time to maximize the shock. (ie. the least innocent artist vs. the most innocent) All the free publicity has gone perfectly to all the right places, Taylor Swift looks cuter and more innocent then ever, Beyonce looks mature and sophisticted, Kayne promotes his reputation as overconfident ego driven hip hop artist. MTV winds up with a massive amount of promotion. Why do you think you can only watch the clip on MTV's website? Kayne's hennessy bottle was probably full of juice.

I loved the speech Madonna gave for Michael Jackson and the tribute did by Janet Jackson for him. I truly believe that what Kanye did was very wrong. Taylor earned her right to thank those that she need to. BUT he did have a point in saying Beyonce's "Single Ladies" is one of the Best Videos of all time.

I admit I didn't watch the whole thing - didn't even watch half of it, so I have to qualify my opinion with "Based on what I saw..."
Taken as a commentary on, or reflection of the state of our current popular culture, I told feel very good about our pop culture. In fact, I'd been downright depressed about it (how it influences the younger generations and, hence, the future) save for 2 things.
First, my father was saying the same thing in the 1960's. I'm not saying he didn't have a point - maybe continuously pushing the envelope has been slowly, inconspicuously leading us, as a society, in a less than desirable direction. On the other hand, maybe it's just a generational thing and every young generation needs it's day testing the boundaries (I realize that the likes of Madonna and many of the others aren't all that young anymore, but when it comes to pop culture, it is the age of the audience being influenced that counts).
And second, maybe I need to temper my bigger view with a more narrow perspective - this was only one event and it was only a certain number of attention seeking, self-absorbed egos who really made the whole thing look bad. Maybe we need to recognize that every generation has had it's share of those types of individuals and move on - look harder for the positive examples instead.
But then again, there is the cynical approach which says that these people are making way too much money for what they contribute to the betterment of society and do we really need to spend a few hours watching them pat themselves on the back (or dis one another, as in KW's example)?

Mr West, given your past performances (I can sing better and thats not saying much...which is why I stick to playing instruments) and your general behaviour, you should consider early retirement followed by a stint in a mental hopsital to have those narcisists tendencies evaluated.

Sarah Liss, did you write every word of this blog? It has ceased to amaze me and now simply amuses me when columnists or bloggers(can't tell the difference anymore) have to praise Madonna through gritted teeth so they find something snide to say. You may need to refresh your memory with Madonnas back catalogue. It's not always been electronic dance music. She has written lyrics that are timeless. I think writing that speech is not beyond her capabilities and like she said, she wrote it from her heart and spent all week adding and subtracting. If you knew Madonna at all, you would know that she is a prolific writer and often very poetic but no, that's not good to print, let's just bash her as often as we can. She can take it, right?

Madonna's speech was the highlight of the show for me and I am not even a Jackson fan but it made me feel bad. The Gagas can try, Beyonce can perform with vocal acrobatics for a song that doesn't need it just to show she has a voice.failing to see singing is not just about a voice, and Pink can turn into a gymnast..all that is interesting for a minute but how many of them will be single handedly selling out stadia all over in the world in their 50s? I say none because they can't even sell out stadiums now at their peak in their own hometown.

Okay, how in the hell did this become a race issue? SUddenly when white people win awards, its a stab against every other race?! Guess what, A LOT OF PEOPLE listen to country music and voted for her to win. Thats the breaks! If Beyonce had won that, do you think the fact that she won would be called racist? Of course not. Everyone who seems to think that this is some conspiracy to keep non whites down has some serious racism issues themselves.
And before anyone starts bitching that I'm only saying that because I'm white....I'm aboriginal and don't use my race as an excuse for anything.
Kanye gets MTV publicity so he will always be invited to these events, even though he's a racist prick. When people ignore him, he'll go away....so stop buying his records so he can live out his life in relative obscurity away from the public

Were the events of last night staged by MTV? It seems likely. In any case, I felt completely turned off altogether by what took place. I am a lover of truth, beauty and freedom, but all I felt from that show was greed, spoilt brat behavior, and untruth. And that is NOT was music is about.

Pink's performance outshone the entire spectacle for me. Kanye, Madonna, Eminem (and yes, even Beyonce and Green Day) seemed so old school while Taylor's subway performance was so energetic. Plus, Madonna and Janet made the Michael Jackson tribute all about THEM. Narcissists. p.s. I'm older than Madonna!

Its ok for Kanye to be human like the rest of us. He's not a god, he's not perfect and he has to swallow his jagged little pills like the rest of us. He'll grow stronger for it. Let him mature his way. You're not fully mature and grown-up until the second you die. No of us are.

The self-important Kanye needs to be taken down a few pegs, for his own good as well as for the world's.

Kanye is so obviously racist and needs to get kicked off his self-made pedistal. The fans chose Taylor to win so how did he find it o.k. to say that about Beyonce. It was the fans choice.....not his.
One would think that him having gone thru a life-altering experience like losing his Mother so tragically would cause him to see things differently and maybe appreciate life and not be so self-centered....but if anything his actions have shown he is even more angry and self-righteous. The ONLY good thing about what he did is that he has now hurt his image (and only his) and Taylor will hopefully have any embarassment or hurt feelings wiped away with everyone showing their disgust with what he did and how much we all appreciate her and her talent. Beyonce was amazing to do what she did....the most self-LESS act she could have done! And I highly doubt that Kanye even wrote those statements, espcially the 2nd one, bcuz I truly don't believe he is capable of saying those words....he wouldn't even know the 1st thing about being humble and apologizing.

You are not sure madonna wrote that speech? why would you doubt about that? People need to start accepting madonna is a genius for once and all... this speech remais absolutly short with what she can think, say or do

In other hand, the people who choose to see this as a race issue are the ones who are racists

Taylor didn't deserve that award if we mesure her with the rest of the nominies, but i'm not quite sure if beyonce did. Anyway, that was a very spoiled, borderline and unpolite way to express it by kanye. Taylor is afterall a gifted TEENAGER, with all the vulnerabilities that stage of life can carry. That was, literally, stealing candy from a kid.

This stunt worked out PERFECTLY.

Kanye wins: he wanted people to talk about him, positive or negative - and he's getting all the attention he aimed for.

Taylor wins: she gets the sympathy of every media outlet and music fan.

Beyonce wins: everyone praises her for maturity and class due to her actions.

Whether orchestrated or spontaneous, this was genius. And all of us sheep, that blindly follow the shepherds known as media and celebrity, once again obnoxiously play into their hands. I gotta applaud Kanye on that.

Another thing I am tired of are the people on this post who keep saying Kanye is making black people look bad and is not representing blacks well. I'm black, and Kanye does not nor has ever represented me. Please stop generalizing people and judge all jackasses independently. Who the hell said that Kanye was the voice of black people? I agree with Briggs and Chris.

I thought it was interesting that I heard during other coverage that Taylor Swift said she was told to stand next to the stage before the award for Best Video was presented. That makes it sound like Beyonce already knew she would win the award and was planning to bring Taylor Swift up on stage as a good PR move.

I'm sure it wouldn't have been hard to convince Kanye to whine that Beyonce should have won, considering how much press he was guaranteed to get and how well it fits in with his past behaviour. Add Taylor Swift, who may or may not have known what was going on, and you have a great little piece of awards drama. Even if the stunt was planned without Swift's knowledge those working on it probably didn't worry too much about her feelings since they knew they were doing her a favour, exposure-wise.

I know, a bit conspiracy theory, but it all seems to fit, and in a big stage managed show like the VMA, it's a stunt that was probably not that hard to pull off.

Everytime she is a no-show, the VMAs will be described as "boring and staid." Only Madonna lit up this year's awards show. Rap musicians have a long and proud history of getting up on stage and yelling about stuff when an award they don't agree with is handed out. Kanye is merely keeping up the tradition of perpetuating negative stereotypes.
Also, someone should gently remind Kanye that yelling rhyming words about hos, money, and bling over a repetitive drum and bass loop does not make one a genious. Seriously, after this stunt and what he said in the wake of hurricane Katrina, he should have his speaking privileges revoked.

Not only did Kanye West embarrass Taylor Swift and stomp all over her shining moment (she's a teenager winning an award for her hard work writing and singing music!) He shone the light on Beyoncé and made her look like a fool at the same time.

What was going through his mind when he decided to rudely interrupt her, and what would he have to say if someone did this to him?

Maybe Kanye is trying to get lucky with Beyonce and/or has anger of some sort? Taylor Swift still receives the MTV award regardless of his disruptive behavior. Although entitled to his opinion, consequences will follow.

I don't know WHAT Kanye think he is, but we can not expect nothing better than what he did to Taylor...something so rude, so dirty just could come from someone like him, from SOMETHING like him.

I really do wonder who in their right mind thinks Kayne or his band have any talent what so ever. He certainly is not the brightest pickle in the jar but he has about as much talent and class as one.

Poor Taylor, to have her moment stolen by a egocentric douchebag like Kanye West. I would pushed him off the stage, but Taylor did handle it gracefully and "lady like" as my mom would say. Bravo to Beyonce, who looked horrrifed by Kayne's stunt, for giving Taylor her moment. Kayne, get a real life ya egomanic and some therapy. You ain't god, don't think you're above everyone else.

The performance by kanye west was disgusting to say the least. As for Ms. Swift she has some decent talent, do I think her video was worthy of the award. Music videos are meant to tell a story, more specifically a story that goes along with the song itself, that's what "you belong with me" does, it tells a story. Beyoncé is talented, but "single ladies" did not deserve a music video award. The video reminded me of Paula Abdul's "straight up", not that there is anything wrong with that, but its not award material. Unless you are watching a black and white pin-up video who honestly wants to see three girls dancing around in a one piece? I think the over all quality of today's musicians and their "work" has gone drastically down hill.

I think Kanye was having a bipolar moment sort of like Lil Mama interrupted a stage. The focus of the show should have been more for Madonna;s touching speech and the amazing performance from Pink.

Madonna, Janet & Michael should be the big talk, not Kanye. That's why I'm pissed. He was the butterfly effect that took ppl attention of what that night was suppose to be about.

Have you heard his latest album??? That should be enough to kill his career. His music makes me deeply appreciate silence. He has nothing interesting to say either musically or lyrically. It's an ego trip with a drum machine in the background.

It would be one thing if Beyonce's video actually was one of the 'best ever made'. Three scantily clad women clumsily gyrating to insipid, derivative and downright annoying music does not constitute a 'best ever' rating. Kanye deserves a boo for bad manners as well as bad taste.

Hello, I was watching the replay of the MTV Video Music Awards a couple of days ago on the Internet and I noticed something. When Lady Gaga was performing, it looked like blood was dripping from her dress. I thought to myself, it's not Halloween. I just wanted to know if anyone noticed that?

Ummm Lady Gaga's performance is THE ONLY actual music performance people are going to remember, so she wasn't upstaged in any way, at this day and age nothing shocks people anymore, Im sure Gaga didn't expect to have the whole world against it because of her symbolic perfoemance, she just wanted to make an impact and she did. When people actually talk about the show they mention Gaga's performance and nobody else's. Kanye's stunt was pathetic and I believe him, Beyonce and the producers were in it. By the way, Single Ladies is a terrible video, one of the best ever? In his dreams.

Kanye, you need downtime. You must be exhausted from scaling the worlds highest ever-growing mountain? It's named Mount A-Hole and it's named after you amongst many others. Congrats, you just reached the top without your feet leaving sea level. And in your climbing party were the pathetic fools who supported your supremely classless MTV show actions. Now c'mon...fess up...exactly what were you on?

I'm not sure why some are saying it boils down to Kayne being a racist, seriously it's 2009 do we need to pull this card now in Canada? Kayne is simply a overly cocky, egostical, self absorbed wannabe who thought he could push his weight around like he's king or somethin. It was disrespectful and he payed for it with the boos, but Bravo to Taylor for being the bigger person and Beyanoce for being classy and giving taylor her moment. As for lady Gaga, seriously does anyone else thing think she's flipped her lid? What was with the hay stakc on her face? Liked the performance though, would have liked it better without the muder like part.

This whole thing about Kanye ruining Taylor swifts moment, as rude and embarassing as it was for him, is stupid and pointless. I hate what the world is becoming nowadays, where everyone cares more about a stupid celebrity slip up than their dying and decaying world around them. Seriously people whats wrong with us? Sure I feel for Taylor Swift, it was a very special moment for her and it was taken away from her by, in President Obamas own words, a jackass. But the amount of publicity and news air time it has recieved just astounds me. What the heck people, come on. There are way more important things going on in our world, lets try and focus on finding a cure for H1N1, or the crisis going on in the middle east. Lets get are act together and stop paying so much attention to Hollywood and start paying attention to the problems that are slowly tearing earth apart.

Personally i think kanye west is an attention seeker who should realize that just because he's a star, that doesn't mean the world revolves around him. Sure, we're all entitled to freedom of speech but no one has the right to steal someone else's limelight for something ignorant like that.

Secondly, Lady Gaga is disgusting, I'm almost sickened by the fact she's made millions off of what she's "accomplished". She may have a hit record, but her behaviour and comments are a little over the top. Secondly, whatever it was that she was trying to portray in her set was brutal. Absolutely horrid. Am I not the only one who thinks she is completely talentless and repulsive?

I'm Not suprised what Kanye did hes known for that kind thing. I feel so bad for taylor shes a very talented girl and totally deserved the award and kanye had no right to do what he did. I am also very happy what beyonce did, that was very classy of her to let taylor finish her speech. Hopefully kanye realized how rude and immature he acted no professional would EVER do something like that. I think he was just looking for attention because he is a self centered person and only cares about himself. GOOD FOR YOU taylor and Beyonce you both amazing, talented and classy women and people should look up to the both of you!

Its about time Kanye starts to learn from his mistakes, it makes no sence to keep voicing his opinions publicly because it only hurts his fan base. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but to humiliate swift was rude. Kanye has once again taken it too far, and publicly humiliated taylor.

kanye had no right to jump up on the stage and bash taylor swift, suggesting the beyonce get the award in the middle of her speech. at least beyonce went up on stage afterwards and had the decency to congratulate her on the award.

I personally think that Kanye West should not have done what he did, although he has the right to voice his opinion he should have waited until a better, more suitable time. On the other side though people are taking the comment way too seriously, it may not have been right but it happened and he's done it before and will do it again, we just have to get used to Kanye West voicing his opinion at innapropriate times.

On the upside, it has revealed that Beyonce is a classy lady. Inviting Swift onto the stage for a do over was the right thing to do.

What Kayne did was distasteful, rude, ignorant, and disrespectful...but somehow I feel like this good for his career in some shape, way, or form. "You're only as good as your latest scandal"-from the Degrassi TV movie quoted from Perez Hilton-does seem to point out why Kanye is still famous. Most likely his next album will sell millions, he'll probably write about how sorry he is, and mostly say in the notes something about God, feelings, blah blah. Stiill, someone famous will do something even more rude, stupid, or dangerous and Kanye will be left in the dust again. Seriously, has anyone noticed this besides me?

As much as I hate what Kanye represents and says at all times, my question is this:

How could Beyoncé win for Video of the Year, and NOT win the best Female Video of the Year award?

If you win the Video of the Year, wouldn’t it be safe to say that you also have the best Female Video of the Year?

Me thinks something is fishy MTV…
