James Bond car lands in Italian lake

Last Updated: Sunday, April 20, 2008 | 10:18 AM ET

A stunt driver on the latest James Bond film has crashed the character's famous Aston Martin DBS into Italy's Lake Garda.

An Aston Martin, James Bond's iconic car, is fished out of Lake Garda, near Torbole, northern Italy, on Saturday after it plunged into the water during the drive to the set of the latest film in the 007 series. The ANSA news agency reports the car was on its way early Saturday morning to the set of Quantum of Solace when the driver lost control of the Aston Martin, which plunged into the lake in northern Italy.

The stuntman was rescued by firemen and survived with a few bruises.

Italian television showed shots of the smashed-in car being winched back on dry land.

The accident has major consequences for the film. Italian reports say the car was the only one available for shooting, which has spanned the globe from England to Chile and Mexico.

The production has had some difficulties already. A shoot in the famous Inca ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru had to be scrapped in March because of bad weather.

Spain is the next locale for the film, which has British actor Daniel Craig reprising his role as the suave secret agent.

Quantum of Solace features two new Bond beauties: Olga Kurylenko as Camille, a sidekick to Bond, and Gemma Arterton as an MI-6 agent named Fields.

French actor Mathieu Amalric, who starred in the biopic The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, plays the film's villain.

The 22nd Bond film is due for release in November.
