Little Miss Sunshine, made for $8 million US, follows a dysfunctional family on a road trip as they overcome various obstacles trying to get their little girl to a beauty pageant. The film, starring Steve Carell, Toni Collette and Abigail Breslin, has earned more than $60 million US so far.

It beat out heavyweight contenders Babel, The Departed, The Queen and the musical Dreamgirls at the awards show in Los Angeles on Saturday.

The winner of the best picture Academy Award has matched the PGA's choice in 11 of the past 17 years.

While the award could boost Little Miss Sunshine's profile, the Producers Guild — representing 3,100 motion picture, television and new media producers worldwide — has not been a good gauge of Oscar glory in the past two years, however.

In 2006, the guild chose Brokeback Mountain but the Academy went with Crash. And in 2005, it anointed The Aviator, which then lost out to Million Dollar Baby on Oscar night.

Babel and Dreamgirls took the top awards at the Golden Globes earlier this week while The Departed nabbed a directing prize for Martin Scorsese.

Other PGA winners include:

  • Best Animated Movie: Cars
  • Best Made-For-TV Film: Elizabeth I
  • Best TV Drama Series: Grey's Anatomy
  • Best TV Comedy Series: The Office
  • Best Non-Fiction TV Series: 60 Minutes
  • Best Variety Show: Real Time with Bill Maher
