Day 3: Jay-Z and Coldplay cap a crazy weekend

This weekend, the tiny town of Pemberton, B.C., will host a music event to rival the Glastonbury festival in England and maybe even Woodstock. Running July 25-27, the Pemberton Festival will feature such globetrotting acts as Coldplay, Nine Inch Nails and Jay-Z, as well as Canadian performers like the Tragically Hip, Metric, Kathleen Edwards and Buck 65. Laura Thompson from CBC Newsworld’s The Scene will be blogging the event for CBCNews.ca.

The Pemberton Festival is a wasteland. The ground is slimy muck and people are wandering around like zombies. Garbage is everywhere and the toilets are beyond foul. An RCMP officer confirmed there were a lot of drugs, overdoses and people passing out in bushes this weekend. All this before the most anticipated day at Pemberton had even begun.

Day 2: The rain, the Hip and the Heartbreakers

Last night, Pemberton hardly slept. Dance music pulsed all through the night and masses of campers drank their heatstroke away. With the new dawn, came ferocious hangovers and a great deal of wheezing. The dust has launched what seems to be a festival-wide asthma epidemic. One person I talked to, with no previous respiratory problems, actually had to go to a clinic in Whistler for an inhaler.

Day 1: Digging it in the dirt

I have a dirt tan. My eyes are stinging, my nose is whistling and I think I taste hay. Thousands of music fans landed in Pemberton today and are literally kicking up dust. Thick, murky clouds of dust that everyone is inhaling.

Down in the valley

It was all over the news in Vancouver how horrendous traffic was expected to be on Highway 99 this weekend. The infamously picturesque Sea to Sky is smack dab in the middle of a major facelift in anticipation of the 2010 Winter Olympics. It’s inconvenient timing for the thousands of music lovers who will navigate their way up the winding, narrow route toward the majestic Coast Mountains for the inaugural Pemberton Festival -- the hottest pop culture ticket in the country this weekend.
