Lesson Plan: For Teachers: Who Was Maurice 'Rocket' Richard?
Write the following phrase on the
board: "A true Canadian hero..." Have students generate a list of individuals
whom they consider to be current Canadian heroes. Then have them generate a
list of individuals whom they consider to be historical Canadian heroes.
When all of the names are on the board, have students create categories to sort the heroes named (for example, sports, media, politics). At the end of the discussion, look at the individuals in the sports category and have the students explain why they selected these particular individuals. Then introduce Maurice 'Rocket' Richard as the sports hero they will be learning more about.
Outline the Opportunity
Have students explore the topic The Legendary #9: Maurice 'Rocket' Richard on the CBC Digital Archives website. Students should select 10 significant events and create a timeline that includes each event. Their timeline should be annotated, and students should be prepared to explain why they chose each event. Have students create their final timeline using a word-processing program.
Revisit and Reflect
Display the timelines in the classroom, and have students circulate to view them all. After thoroughly examining the timelines, students should work in groups of up to four to create a complete timeline of Rocket Richard's life based on the information presented.
Have students write a position paragraph explaining whether or not Rocket Richard should be considered a Canadian sports hero. Students must justify their position by drawing reference to the events in Richard's life as presented on their final annotated timeline. After students have completed their position paragraphs, select three or four students to read their written work to the class.
