Lesson Plan: For Teachers: Information Paragraph
Write the term daycare on the board and ask students to provide words or ideas that they associate with this term. Record their responses on the board or chart paper. Lead a brief class discussion about daycare as a fundamental service for many families in modern Canadian society.
Outline the Opportunity
students to Who Cares for Our Kids?: The
Changing Face of Daycare in Canada on the CBC Digital Archives website.
Each student should choose from the clips "Daycare during wartime", "Broken
promises", "Quebec's $5 revolution", "A failing grade", "Dangerous Daycares"
and "A lottery for the lucky."
Students will view or listen to their chosen clip thoroughly, read the Did You Know sections, and take careful notes to answer the questions Who, What, When, Where, and Why. Have students write an information paragraph detailing what they found.
Revisit and Reflect
Students can trade their paragraph with a partner who did not view the same clip, or share their paragraphs in small groups with others who did not view the same clip.
Have students use their paragraphs as the basis for a newspaper article detailing the issue they researched.
