Lesson Plan: For Teachers - Heroes Abroad: McClure and Léger

Type:
Assignment
Subjects:
History, Social Studies, Media Studies, Religious Studies
Duration:
1 to 2 lessons
Purpose:
To perform online research and write a newspaper article
Summary:
Students write a newspaper article about a Canadian missionary.

Lesson Plan

Before Exploring

Write the word "hero" and the phrase "service to others" on the board. Provide a selection of recent newspapers and have pairs or groups of students search and clip any newspaper article they think profiles someone they would consider a hero or someone who provides a service to others. Ask students to share their findings. As a class, create lists of criteria for "hero" and "service to others."

Outline the Opportunity

Direct students to the topic Their Christian Duty: Canadian Missionaries Abroad on the CBC Digital Archives website. Assign half the class the clip "Dr. Bob McClure: medical missionary" and the other half the clip "The cardinal in Cameroon" to review thoroughly.

Students will use the download sheet Heroes Abroad to take notes about their clip in preparation for writing a newspaper article about either Dr. Bob McClure or Paul-Émile Cardinal Léger. Students can write an editorial, interview, information article, or any other newspaper-style piece that they find appropriate for the material.

Revisit and Reflect

Have students peer edit one another's work and invite students to read their articles to the class. Create a special edition newspaper about missionaries and display it or distribute it to the class.

Extension

Students can work in pairs to prepare role-plays in which they assume the roles of on-air interviewer and either McClure or Léger. Allow time for students to rehearse and present their role-plays.
