Lesson Plan

Before Exploring

Distribute the download sheet From Bill to Law and have students complete Part A by defining the terms listed. Review students' responses and have them do Part B. Review students' responses.

Introduce or review how to create a flow chart.

Outline the Opportunity

With a partner, students will review the topic Trudeau's Omnibus Bill: Challenging Canadian Taboos on the CBC Digital Archives website. Using information from the topic, pairs will create a flow chart outlining the process from bill to law. Have students summarize the Omnibus Bill in Part C of their download sheet.

Revisit and Reflect

Ask several pairs to present their flowcharts and summaries while you create a common flow chart on the board or chart paper. Include any steps students may have missed, for example, that before the bill becomes law, the Governor General must sign it.

Students can use newspapers or the internet to locate, list, and describe current Canadian bills that may become law. Have students write in their journals to outline their position on a current bill.
