Lesson Plan: For Teachers: Civvy Street
Ask students what they know about advertising through infomercials. How do these commercials convey their message? What do they do to interest the audience? How effective are they? Create a list outlining the elements of an infomercial.
Outline the Opportunity
Direct students to Continuing the Fight: Canada's Veterans on the CBC Digital Archives website and have them listen to the clip titled "Return to 'civvy street'".
Ask: Why were these broadcasts shared on radio as opposed to other media?
How do you think the civilian population was feeling as veterans returned from war?
How would you respond to this clip if you were a civilian waiting for your father to return from the war?
Have students create a picture illustrating any one point made in the context of the radio clip. Alternatively, they can write a letter to a friend in the role of a young person or spouse who is waiting for a veteran to return from war and has listened to several of the radio programs.
Revisit and Reflect
Invite students to display or read their work. Gather as a class and ask:
How did the pictures and letters affect you?
What different perspectives did people share?
What might a letter from a soldier coming home be like?
How would it be different from letters of those awaiting that person's return?
Have students consider the stresses and emotional strain facing Canada's peacekeepers over the last 10 years. Students can prepare a storyboard for a video that prepares Canadian civilians for the return of their family members who may be suffering from the effects of severe stress.Download PDF
