Social Studies, English Language Arts, Political Studies
Duration:
1 to 2 lessons
Purpose:

Summary:
In this introductory activity, students complete a KWL chart about June Callwood.

Lesson Plan

Before Exploring

In small groups, students discuss what they already know about June Callwood and complete together the first column of the KWL chart on the download sheet About June Callwood.

Outline the Opportunity

Direct students to the topic June Callwood: Canada's Conscience on the CBC Digital Archives website. In the same small groups, have them complete the second column of the KWL chart: what they want to know about June Callwood.

Ask students to scan the contents on the topic site and to choose several clips or portions of clips that they will use to complete the L column of the KWL chart. Give students about 30 minutes to complete their work, or an amount of time appropriate to their age, ability, and experience.

Revisit and Reflect

Have each group assign a leader. Group leaders will share the group's findings with the class. The class will review the facts, check for accuracy, and list additional pertinent information. During this process, list on the board any new questions that students want to explore.

Extension

June Callwood described the process of writing as a treasure hunt. Students can use their knowledge of June Callwood to complete their own treasure hunt by writing a brief profile of her for a newspaper. They need to answer the 5Ws, have an interesting heading, write a summary lead, and use short paragraphs.
