Lesson Plan: For Teachers: A Personal Sports Story

English Language Arts
1 to 2 lessons
To write a short story based on personal experience
Students write a story about a sports experience.

Lesson Plan

Before Exploring

Ask students which sports they play. In an open forum, discuss aspects of the sport that students like and dislike. Ask them if they have had any emotional experiences involving a sport. Explain that students will be writing a short story based on a personal experience in sport. If necessary, students can substitute a personal experience with another hobby.

Outline the Opportunity

Direct students to the topic The Spirit of Hockey on the CBC Digital Archives website. Have students listen to the clip "The Hockey Sweater" and jot down what they liked about the style of the story. Students then browse the clip titles and listen to any clip they feel might help them write their story. Using their personal information and any details they have gathered, students write their story.

Revisit and Reflect

Have students read their stories out loud or post them around the class for others to read. Ask readers to complete the questionnaire on the download sheet A Personal Sports Story. Return the questionnaires to each writer.

Students can edit their stories based on the questionnaires or write a response indicating why they felt that changes were not necessary. Have the students submit the final essay for grading.
