Lesson Plan: 100th Anniversary of Anne of Green Gables
Lesson Plan
Before Exploring
Ask students to read Anne of Green Gables. Lead a class discussion about their favourite parts of the novel.
Outline the Opportunity
Explain that the class will organize a tribute to Lucy Maud Montgomery to mark the 2008 100th anniversary of the publication of Anne of Green Gables. Divide the class into small groups and have them review the topic Beyond Green Gables: The Life of Lucy Maud Montgomery on the CBC Digital Archives website. They will select 5 to 10 minutes of footage, choosing excerpts that best represent the novel. Students will need to note the clips they will use, the order they will show them, where they will add voice-overs, and what information the voice-overs will include. Finally, have students choose a scene from the novel to perform for the rest of the class.
Revisit and Reflect
Students will present their dramatic presentations to the class. Ask: What did you find most challenging about this assignment? What was most interesting? How did you choose excerpts from the Web site? Why did you choose your scene from the novel?
Extension
Students can add props and costumes and present their final productions to an audience outside the classroom. They can also propose and discuss plans for the anniversary of the publication of the novel. Ask: How could the novel best be recognized? They should take into account the role of organizations, government, Lucy Maud Montgomery's descendents, and the province of Prince Edward Island.
