Leafs fans lament team’s mediocrity in 1984

The Story

It's been 17 years since the last Stanley Cup win for the Toronto Maple Leafs -- make that at least 18, now that they've failed to qualify for the 1984 playoffs. In this CBC-TV report, Maple Leaf Gardens stands empty as passersby shrug about the team's losing season.

Did You know?

• The Leafs also missed the playoffs in 1985 and 1989. In 1986 and '87 they made it past the first round of playoffs before being knocked out in the second, and in 1988 they did not advance past the first round.

• As of 2014, the closest the Leafs have come to the Stanley Cup since winning it in '67 was in 1993, when they reached the semifinal round against the Los Angeles Kings. The Kings won that series in Game 7 at Maple Leaf Gardens. The Leafs made it to the semifinal round in 1994, 1999 and 2002 as well.
