NHL Showdown: Rick MacLeish vs. Gilbert Perrault

media clip
Two slick scorers hit the ice in this edition of Showdown 78 as Philadelphia Flyer Rick MacLeish matches up against Buffalo Sabre Gilbert Perrault. It's a nail-biter of a contest, coming down to one last breakaway shot.
• Gilbert Perrault was the first player ever drafted by the Buffalo Sabres. Buffalo and Vancouver were new franchises in 1970 and Buffalo won the first draft pick. Sabres GM Punch Imlach selected Perrault, an Ontario Hockey Association all-star, most valuable player and two-time Memorial Cup champion. The pick paid immediate dividends as Perrault racked up 38 goals and 34 assists, winning the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie of the year.
  • Glenn (Chico) Resch got his nickname from former New York Islanders teammate Doug Rombough, who frequently mocked Resch's attempts to speak Spanish. The name was inspired by the 1970s TV series Chico and the Man.
